In the
summer of 2004, “The 4400” aired on the USA Network as a “limited
series” and became a critical success that lead to encore airings on networks
like SCI FI as well as a release of the complete first season on DVD by
Paramount Home Entertainment just in time for the holidays. “The 4400” is a
live action dramatic science fiction TV series, which has become the direction
of sci-fi in general with popular and serious character driven programs like
“LOST” on ABC and the new “Battlestar Galactica” on SCI FI as prime
examples of this movement away from the space operas of the 1990s like
“Babylon 5” and the various incarnations of “Star Trek.” With the third
season of “The 4400” due to premiere on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at 9pm
(ET/PT) on the USA Network, Paramount Home Entertainment has released the
complete second season on DVD as a four disc set packaged in two slim keep cases
within a cardboard slipcase so that fans and newcomers alike can reacquaint or
discover the shows’ characters and situations.
A year
and a half has past since a mysterious comet like light returned 4400 people who
had been declared missing and or were presumed dead. With little to no memory of
what had happened to them, it soon becomes apparent that these people are not
quite who they were before. They’ve changed with gifts such as the ability to
heal the ill or see into the near future being just the tip of the iceberg. Some
can do a lot more and it seems as though their powers are evolving and sometimes
those powers can be a curse for the 4400 from within as well as a growing issue
of paranoia and mistrust from non altered or abducted humans.
While the
first season was about the issues surrounding individuals whose lives were
literally interrupted and how it changes a society in general, the second season
deepens our understanding of the characters and expands the situations to
comment on contemporary issues regarding religion, politics, and asks the
question raised from the first season. If the 4400 were abducted and sent back
in time from humans in the future trying to avert some future catastrophe, then
what is it that the 4400 now placed in our own space and time are preventing
from taking place and what exactly is a human from the future? The series
features Joel Gretsch (Steven Spielberg Presents Taken) and genre film
and television guest stars that include Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer), Lexa
Doig (Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda), Peter Coyote (E.T. The Extraterrestrial),
and none other than Jeffrey Combs (Star Trek: Deep Space
Nine/Voyager/Enterprise). In fact there is a little in-joke in the second season
premiere episode where Combs hands one of the 4400 a
book. It’s H.P. Lovecraft’s “In The Mountains Of Madness.” Combs’ fans
should remember his memorable turn as Dr. Herbert West in the cult horror hit
“H.P. Lovecraft’s Re-Animator,” which spawned two straight to video
sequels. Combs also appeared in “H.P. Lovecraft’s From Beyond.”
All
thirteen episodes of this gripping TV series are presented in their (1.78:1)
widescreen format enhanced for 16 by 9 televisions with a terrific picture
quality and the episodes also feature well rounded English Dolby Digital 5.1
Surround Sound and Dolby Surround Soundtracks as well as English Closed Captions
for the hearing impaired encoded onto all four discs as options. Extra value
features include select episode audio commentary tracks for the episodes “As
Fate Would Have It”, “The Fifth Page”, and “Mommy’s Bosses” with
Series Stars Joel Gretsch and Jacqueline McKenzie, Writer and Co-Producer
Craig Sweeny, and Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr on discs two, three, and
four respectively and these commentaries are very informal, conversational, and
more retrospective in nature than screen specific at times. Also on the fourth
disc are three featurettes that cover the development of the series entitled
“Creating The Ball Of Light” (11:26) where viewers will learn that the
premise was loosely inspired by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The
second featurette focuses on how the show was developed from what was
potentially a limited series into a second season in “Return Of The 4400”
(11:26) and there is a very engaging look at the theoretical science behind time
travel with video clips of various physicists discussing the possibilities
(9:41). A reel of previews that
include TV on DVD sets for “The Brady Bunch”, “Charmed”, and
“MacGyver” (2:47) precedes the main menu on disc one and can also be
accessed directly as a menu choice on the first disc too. The menus on all four
discs are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“The 4400: The Complete Second
Season” is available on DVD now at retailers on and offline courtesy of
Paramount Home Entertainment and is a perfect way to prepare for the third
season premiere on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at 9pm
(ET/PT) on the USA Network.
