The life
of Errol Flynn is just as amazing as the swashbuckling movies he is famous for.
Born in Tasmania in 1909, he rebelled against authority as a child and at the
age of 18, he went to New Guinea, one of the most primitive places on Earth,
where he spent more than four years as a gold prospector, patrol officer and
tobacco plantation manager. In 1933 he appeared as Fletcher Christian in
Australia’s first sound feature, “In The Wake Of The Bounty.” He then
acted in 22 plays for a repertory company in England and eventually found
himself in Hollywood as a contract player at Warner Brothers. His first starring
role was in the 1935 feature “Captain Blood,” where he appeared opposite
Olivia de Havilland and the two would go on to appear together in eight features
collectively.
The
picture quality, including the feature film clips is very good and the DVD
features a clear English Stereo Soundtrack along with English Closed Captions
for the hearing impaired. The menus are standard interactive still frames that
are easy to navigate.
The
documentary features interview clips with Film Historian Rudy Behlmer, Actress
Olivia de Havilland, and Actors Richard Dreyfuss, David Niven, Basil Rathbone,
and Burt Reynolds among others. This documentary premiered on Turner Classic
Movies on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 and is exclusively available on DVD as a part
of Warner Home Video’s “Errol Flynn: The Signature Collection” DVD box
set, which is available at retailers on and offline now. The documentary alone
justifies buying the entire box set especially if you are a fan of Errol Flynn
and his movies.
