The
second season of “All in The Family” has arrived with all 24 episodes spread
across three dual layered discs and an episode guide insert, which details a
synopsis for each show as well as a list of the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards the
series garnered in 1972. Among the impressive credits the second season of
“All In The Family” garnered are 1972 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy
Series, Outstanding Performance Awards for Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton,
and Sally Struthers, as well as Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series
– Musical or Comedy and Actress – Musical or Comedy: Jean Stapleton.
Season
two of “All In The Family” lead to the first of many spin-offs that would
develop from the series entitled “Maude,” which starred Beatrice Arthur (The
Golden Girls), who made two guest appearances that include “Cousin Maude’s
Visit” and the second season finale that also serves as the series pilot for
“Maude” and not surprisingly serves as the title for the series finale.
“Maude” would eventually lead to the spin-off “Good
Times,” which has also been released on DVD along with the second season
of “Sanford And Son.”
Other
noteworthy episodes in the second season set include “Flashback: Mike Meets
Archie”, “Edith Writes A Song”, “Christmas Day At The Bunkers”, “The
Elevator Story”, and “Sammy’s Visit.”
The
approximate running time for each episode of the second season of “All In The
Family” is about 25 to 26-minutes. Each episode is presented in the (1.33:1)
aspect ratio of their original television broadcast with English Two-Channel
Monaural Sound and English Captions and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired
and Spanish Language Subtitles encoded onto each DVD. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. The photo on the cover of
the packaging appears on the main menu and none of the episodes offer any scene
selections, which might be a bit of a drag for those wanting to skip through
opening credits and whatnot fast. The picture quality is not crystal clear, but
it is not because of the DVD mastering. I think it is simply that available
videotaped masters used were probably the best available, but over 30 years they
have developed some grain. The English Monaural Soundtrack is clear throughout
with no annoying hissing.
There
are no extra features at all and the set comes in a three-disc Digipack gatefold
within a glossy cardboard slipcase. Television collector’s can purchase “All
In The Family: The Complete Second Season” courtesy of Columbia TriStar Home
Entertainment now by simply visiting the direct buying link above this review or
