December 11, 2006 - Here is a Blu-ray Disc review of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's "Kingdom Of Heaven: Director's Cut." I saw Mel Gibson's Apocalypto over the weekend. It was the first time I had been to a movie theater casually in months and I had read a local New York newspaper review the morning before I went to see the film. The film critic is one whose reviews I admire very much. No one ever agrees with film critics one hundred percent of the time, but sometimes there are critics whose opinions one tends to agree with more often than not. This said I was kind of surprised at the review the motion picture critic wrote because I just did not see the film in the same manner as his review made it seem or would have me expect it to be. For the record, Apocalypto is not a great film, but compared to much of what has been released over the past year, it is far from the worst. While some have focused on the film's violence, which in my opinion is tame compared to some of the movies I've reviewed, and Gibson himself has remarked about the signs from within that detail the fall of a great civilization, what struck me as interesting about Apocalypto was the subtext concerning fathers and sons.  In the film we two sets of fathers and sons. One is the father of Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), who instills a sense of pride, self reliance, and knowledge of how fear can infect one's soul. The other father figure is leader of the Mayan invaders who attack the village and who rewards his son with his knife during their long trek back to the city with their captives. Both fathers in the film love their sons and both sons look up to and respect their fathers. What ultimately differentiates the fate of the two sons is the environment and manner in which they were raised. To the very end Jaguar Paw's father is honorable and teaches his son to think while the son of the Mayan is not in my opinion a fully matured adult. He is still seeking his father's approval and the example his father sets is one of obeying commands without thinking for one's self.

This dichotomy can be seen in a larger scale in the manner in which the village Elder tells the tribe a story about man's unquenchable desire without giving a soothing resolution. Indeed this is a foreshadowing of things to come. However haunting the story might be, the question it sends both the villagers and the movie theater viewer invites one to ponder the meaning of the words in their own life. Conversely the Mayans blindly follow their Mayan High Priest with bread and circuses provided through ritual bloodlust sacrifices to appease their gods and ignore the obvious signs as to why their civilization is dieing. They grow crops near a pit of rotting headless corpses, allow their people to suffer and die from pestilence and famine without taking into consideration why they are being faced with extinction. Despite the Mayan advances in mathematics, architecture and building, as well as an understanding of astronomy that was ahead of their European counterparts at one time, they abandon science and reason out of fear in favor of religious theatrics and empty rituals. In short they no longer think for themselves. They only react and thus that is why the quality of life for the villagers in the jungle is better than the Mayan citizens. The tragedy of Apocalypto has nothing to do with the stars to paraphrase Shakespeare. It lies within the people themselves. Thus hopefully people who see Mel Gibson's Apocalypto will not just walk away thinking about the film as an adventure story, but as an allegory  for our own troubled world today. It may not be easy, but we need to think people...

Far below the surface of the earth, disaster strikes when a rock fall blocks their exit and there’s no way out.  The women push on, praying for another exit, but there is something else lurking under the earth.  The friends are now prey, forced to unleash their most primal instincts in an all out war against an unspeakable horror – one that attacks without warning, again and again and again.  Both unrated versions feature bone-chilling extras that include outtakes, deleted scenes, commentaries with the director and cast, featurettes and more.  In addition, the original unrated cut features an ending never-before-seen in U.S. theaters!

With groundbreaking Blu-ray features such as THE GATE: The Descent Underground Experience, special features presented in high-definition, along with 6.1 PCM audio (uncompressed), Blu-ray java interactive menus, The Descent dual-layer (BD) 50GB sets the bar for maximizing the capabilities of the Blu-ray format.  With Blu-ray, it is also possible to view both the high-definition original unrated cut of the film as well as the theatrical version that was released in the United States.

About the Movies

GoodFellas Blu-ray Disc - Based on the true-life best seller “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi and backed by a dynamic pop/rock oldies soundtrack, critic Roger Ebert declared GoodFellas “the best mob movie ever.”  It earned six Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director and was named 1990’s ‘Best Film’ by the New York, Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics.  Scorsese was also awarded the Silver Lion Award in Venice.  Robert De Niro received wide recognition for his performance as veteran criminal Jimmy “The Gent” Conway, and Joe Pesci, as the volatile Tommy DeVito, walked off with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar®.  Academy Award® nominees Lorraine Bracco, Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino also turned in electrifying performances.  GoodFellas explores the criminal life like no other movie.  It’s an electrifying, fact-inspired tale of living – and dying.

Poseidon HD DVD, directed by Wolfgang Peterson and stars Kurt Russell, Andre Braugher, Emmy Rossen, Freddy Rodriguez and Josh Lucas. When a rogue wave capsizes a luxury cruise ship in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, a small group of survivors find themselves unlikely allies in a battle for their lives. As the unstable vessel rapidly floods with water, they face unimaginable odds and life-altering decisions in their desperate fight to the surface.

Scooby Doo: The Movie HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc - Scooby-Doo and his clever crime-solving cohorts Fred (Freddie Prinze, JR), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Velma (Linda Cardellini) are individually summoned to Spooky Island to investigate a series of paranormal incidents at the ultra-hip Spring Break hot spot.  Concerned that his frightfully popular resort might truly be haunted, Spooky Island owner Emile Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) tries to reunite those notoriously meddling detectives to solve the mystery before his supernatural secret scare away the college crowds.  Scooby and the gang will have to overcome their personal differences and forget everything they think they know about fake ghouls and phony creatures to crack the case, save themselves and possibly…the world.

About the Movies

The Polar Express is based on the beloved Caldecott Medal children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg about a doubting young boy who takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve.  He embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

A Christmas Story – Humorist Jean Shepherd’s nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s stars Peter Billingsley as a nine-year-old named Ralphie who has only one thing on his Christmas list: a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Air Rifle.  With his parents unwilling to buy him the gun because he might “shoot his eye out,” Ralphie decides to mount a full-scale, hint-dropping, Santa-begging campaign.  He also endures a slew of calamities from snowsuit paralysis to the dreaded tongue-on-a-frozen-flagpole gambit.  The New York Times calls A Christmas Story “maybe the best Christmas movie ever.”

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) attempts to create a picture perfect, old-fashioned Christmas for his family and invites his extended family to celebrate the holidays at his home.  But a festive supporting cast including Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Juliette Lewis and Doris Roberts, 25,000 lights on the roof, an exploding turkey on the dining room table and a SWAT team taking siege outside soon help Clark realize that more does not always mean merrier.  “Chevy Chase is at his best!”  John Hughes wrote and was a producer on National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation; Jeremiah S. Chechik directs.

Babylon 5 is a top selling franchise on DVD to date with over $44 million in consumer sales.  Launched in February 1993, the award winning series was a top rated show on television with more than 13.7 million viewers in its debut season. After its original planned five-year run – introducing the concept of a five year arc before other TV series began to use multi-season arcs -- the show went on to enjoy 9 successful years in syndication and Cable on the Sci-Fi Channel and TNT.  It also spurred the creation of five feature length movies based on the series including The Gathering, In the Beginning, Thirdspace, River of Souls and A Call to Arms, as well as the limited series Crusade.  “It’s great to be reunited with Joe and Doug once again,” commented Maday.  “I have always been very proud to be associated with their wonderful work on Babylon 5 and I’m confident the “Lost Tales” will add to the legacy of this very special franchise.”

On an immense space station built by the Earth Alliance in the 2250s, the crew of Babylon 5 are charged with maintaining the peace among the various alien races by providing a sanctuary where grievances and negotiations can be worked out among duly appointed ambassadors. Aside from its diplomatic function, Babylon 5 also serves as a military post for Earth and a port of call for travelers, traders, businessmen, criminals, and Rangers.  The story of The Lost Tales picks up several years after the events of its original story, and follows several of its major characters in new adventures set against the backdrop of the Babylon 5 universe.

CENTURY CITY, Calif.  (November 2, 2006) –  Continuing its unwavering commitment to the Blu-ray Disc format (BD), the only high-definition packaged media platform broadly supported by the film, music, gaming, computing and consumer electronics industries, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) today announced the North American Blu-ray debut of X-MEN: THE LAST STAND on November 14, timed and demographically perfect for the launch of Sony’s much-anticipated Playstation 3 on November 17.  The three X-MEN movies are among the studio’s most popular and successful, collectively grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and selling over 45 million DVD/VHS units.  Reigning as one of the biggest films of the year and the industry’s biggest BD release ever, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND features 100% HD content in AVC (MPEG4) including the film and the bonus features – a first for Fox.  It carries a suggested retail price of $39.98 U.S. / $49.98 Canada.

The BD release of X-MEN: THE LAST STAND on November 14 joins Fox’s stellar, action-packed line-up of initial BD releases, which includes BEHIND ENEMY LINES, FANTASTIC FOUR, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Director’s Cut), KISS OF THE DRAGON, THE OMEN (2006), THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, SPEED and THE TRANSPORTER.  These releases also carry a suggested retail price of US$39.98/CAN$49.98.

The following week bring the Studio’s first day-and-date DVD and BD release with the concurrent release of ICE AGE:  THE MELTDOWN on November 21 in North America. This inaugural day-and-date release will benefit from the comprehensive, multi-million dollar marketing campaigns already in place for ICE AGE:  THE MELTDOWN, which will tout the availability of the title on both DVD and BD.

Authored in HDMV with AVC (MPEG 4 compression) and exceptional 6.1 DTS ES HD Lossless Master Audio, the X-MEN: THE LAST STAND BD release boasts two commentary tracks (director Brett Ratner with writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg; separate track featuring producers Avi Arad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter), 12 alternate / extended scenes presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital audio (with optional director / writer commentary) and enhanced Marvel Trivia Track – with this feature activated, color graphics pop up throughout the film giving inside information from the Marvel universe on characters and events, plus favorite Marvel Comics are referenced and Marvel characters and graphics are incorporated into the presentation.
