Season Three opens with the chickens still roosting as the consequences of trying to find a Wraith cure puts the human population of both galaxies at risk. Doctor Weir (Torri Higginson) is then faced with an inquiry on Earth and is forced to step through the gate in order to attend while desperate efforts are made to prevent the Wraith hive ships from reaching Earth as well as deal with the spiraling consequences of the actions taken. In a way I feel as though the third season more than anything else is about consequences with the loss of a beloved character and cast member and the introduction of threats that were thought to have been long defeated in the Milky Way, ready to annihilate humanity in the Pegasus galaxy. When the third season first began airing during the summer of 2006 on SCI FI, the first ten episodes were intriguing with guest appearances by Richard Dean Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, Connor Trinneer, Beau Bridges, and Robert Picardo. We get an even better understanding of the Wraith as a species and not just a predator. Then SCI FI had the second half the third season episodes on hold for approximately ten months and as a result, unless you are a hardcore fan, after almost a year between the first half and second half of the third season, one loses interest.  The second half is hit and miss, especially the episode entitled Vengeance, where the heroes must defend themselves against giant genetically engineered bugs in an episode that seems like a cheap knockoff of Aliens. The season finale is a direct set up for the fourth season, which premieres on Friday, September 28, 2007 at 10m (ET/PT) on SCI FI.

The five-disc set presents all twenty episodes in their widescreen (1.78:1) broadcast aspect ratios and are enhanced for 16 by 9 televisions. The episodes look much better than the letterboxed SCI FI channel broadcasts as well as their (1.33:1) broadcasts that are shown in syndication after SCI FI completes a season. The improvement in visual effects whether it is makeup or CGI can be truly appreciated here. It is amazing to see how far the show has come in general and collectively the added clarity to the visual effects is a highlight to watching the series on DVD. English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound as well as a French Language Dolby Surround Soundtrack are provided as listening options along with English Closed Captions for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and English, French, and Spanish Language Subtitles.

Extra value features are spread across the five discs to include audio commentaries for the episodes No Man’s Land, Misbegotten, Irresistible, Sateda, Progeny, Common Ground, McKay & Mrs. Miller, Phantoms, The Return Part 1, The Return Part 2, Echoes, Irresponsible, Tao Of Rodney, The Game, The Ark, Sunday, Submersion, Vengeance, and First Strike. Featurettes covering Richard Dean Anderson’s guest appearance in season three, makeup effects, visual effects, a profile of actress Rachel Luttrell, and a retrospective featurette that teases viewers a bit about what they can expect in season four are also included along with still galleries on each disc and Mission Directive featurettes for the episodes Sateda, Progeny, Phantoms, The Game, and First Strike. A DVD spot for Stargate: SG-1: The Complete Tenth Season On DVD 5-Disc Set as well as a 48-second teaser for the upcoming Stargate film The Ark Of Truth wrap up on bonus materials within this five-disc box set. The main menu for each disc is animated while the subsequent menus are all standard interactive still frames and are well rendered and easy to navigate.
