Inspired by research
that reveals that if one were to lay down a map of America's Tornado Alley and
then lay down another map where the most nuclear power plants in the United
States are located, one would discover they fit right on top of each other. In
fact Executive Producer Stanley M. Brooks states that a major storm Ohio knocked
out a nuclear power plant's electricity, forcing it to run on generator power.
Shot on location in
New Zealand, "Atomic Twister" features an amazing mix of 37 CGI shots
and practical effects to create the illusion of hell on Earth in the heartland
of America. The film stars "NYPD Blue" Alumni Sharon Lawrence and
Mark-Paul Gosselaar, along with "LA Law" alumnus Corbin Bernsen; and a
cameo by Olympic Gold Medallist Carl Lewis in the film’s most memorable
moment. It is amazing to see how the effects perfected in theatrical thrillers
like "Twister" have now become even more enhanced with practical
effects for a summer popcorn TV movie thriller like “Atomic Twister.
The film reveals a
few disturbing facts about Nuclear power such as if I am remembering correctly,
it takes 20 years for the used fuel rods to become ready for "safe"
placement in a container, where they remain radioactive for something like one
hundred thousand years! Now add that to the fact that a tornado can turn on a
dime and appear unpredictably and you got what I think is a pretty frightening
combination in what is sure to be one of the better TBS Superstation Original
Movie thrillers. Definitely worth seeing just to see these terrible
possibilities play out on TV. After seeing this movie I have renewed fear in
nuclear power and the wilds of nature unbound.
"Atomic
Twister" will premiere on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at 8PM (ET)/7PM (PT) only
