Sacha
Baron Cohen is an amazing comedic talent. He can create characters that are so
different from each other that I think he can fool anyone. He is best known in
America from the hit HBO series Da Ali G Show, but he has also appeared
in other feature films as well as a Madonna music video. A few years back he
released a feature film with his Ali G character called Ali G In Da House,
but the film was not nearly as funny as his TV show and probably got more
viewings last fall only because it was remarketed touting that it featured a
scene with Borat, which is true, but the two films are nothing alike. Borat:
Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan:
Widescreen DVD is a mock
documentary that has Borat visiting America to make a propaganda film for his
homeland, but upon arriving in New York City, Borat discovers Bay Watch
and then takes an odyssey across the country so he can propose to Pamela
Anderson. The film is very funny and grows on the viewer even more so in
hindsight and with repeat viewings.
The
widescreen DVD edition presents the film in an appropriately and even
surprisingly pristine 16 by 9 enhanced (1. 85:1) aspect ratio with a clear
English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack. French, Russian, and Spanish
Language Dolby Surround Soundtracks are encoded onto the dual layered DVD too
along with English Closed Captions for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and English
and Spanish Language Subtitles. The packaging, interactive menus, and even the
disc and the contents therein are all made to look like they were created in the
character’s home country and extend the illusion created in the movie. There
is an Easter egg of sorts that may offend some viewers if you choose the Hebrew
language option in the interactive menus.
There
are eight deleted scenes presented in a 16 by 9 enhanced widescreen (1.85:1)
aspect ratio. They are all very funny and one wonders why they were cut from the
film to begin with. These scenes can only be viewed individually and include
Borat visiting a Doctor, being stopped by the Police in Washington D.C. and in
Texas as well as Borat receiving a massage by a male masseuse, visiting a
kennel, receiving customer service at a supermarket, and even a television news
broadcast detailing the Rodeo scene from the film. There is also a montage from
the global publicity tour, which includes clips of Cohen as Borat attending
Comic Con, opening Saturday Night Live, and visiting both Late Night
With Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A mock
soundtrack spot and Fox comedy DVD trailers round up the bonus features on this
DVD.
