“Star
Wars Bounty Hunter” is the most cinematic DVD-ROM video game developed by
LucasArts Entertainment Company for the Sony PlayStation 2 Computer
Entertainment System I have ever seen. With special cinematic sequences by
Industrial Light and Magic and sound design by Skywalker Sound, “Star Wars
Bounty Hunter” might be the closest multimedia DVD-ROM that I have ever seen
to an expanded universe interactive prequel to “Star Wars: Episode II: Attack
Of The Clones.” In addition to the support from ILM and Skywalker Sound, the
game features the voice of Temuera Morrison reprising his role as “Jango Fett”
and Leeanna Walsman as “Zam Wessell.” “Clancy Brown” lends his signature
vocal talents for the character of “Montross,” a true “Mandalorian”
alien and not a human, banished by fellow Mandalorian Warriors for actions
leading to the death of his Commander. He was the one who took Jango Fett under
his wing and trained him and he is also a bounty hunter in the game.
Other
characters that appear in the game include the Dark Jedi Komari Vosa, Count
Dooku alias Darth Tyranus, a tough dealing female Toydarian named Rozatta, and a
pit fighter named Meeko Ghintee. The storyline has Darth Sidious taking his new
apprentice Darth Tyranus to remove Bando Gora, whose cult is both a threat to
the crumbling Republic he has been manipulating and his own plans for a new
order of rule across the galaxy. Tyranus hires Jango Fett for the dual role of
assassinating Gora and being the template for a secret new clone army to be
developed on Kamino. Anyone who can kill a Dark Jedi would be the perfect
candidate and Jango is the man for the job! The game was designed and directed
by Jon Knoles.
There
are terrific options among the standard A/V set up choices that include music,
sound, voice level, soundtrack, and captioning, like progressive scan for those
with televisions capable of playing back progressive scan signals. The cut
scenes and animated game play have to be seen to be believed as one collects
bounties on the side while completing various levels across six game chapters.
This is an action combat game in the third person perspective with manipulation
of Fett as well as the camera view in which he can react with a full range of
motions that include jumping, crouching, somersaulting, rolling jetpack thrust,
ledge movement, climbing ladders as well as an array of offensive and defensive
weaponry ranging from Jango’s fists, his Welstar-34 Twin Dual Dallorian Alloy
Blasters, Gauntlet Whipcord, Dartcaster, Flamethrower, Grenade, Sniper Rifle,
Jetpack Mounted Missile, Cluster Missile, and Turret. During the game Jango can also acquire a Heavy Gun, Grenade
Launcher, Blaster Rifle, and a variety of powerups and pickups that assist the
Jango with completing his quest and obtaining his bounty.
The
instruction manual is well written and easy to follow with hints and tips to get
the game off and the hunt going. A version of the game will also be released for
the Nintendo Game Cube. “Star Wars Bounty Hunter” is available on DVD-ROM
now for the Sony PlayStation 2 Computer Entertainment Computer System from
LucasArts Entertainment Company.
