You know one question I get often
from people I meet is “How can you watch so many movies?” They follow that
up quickly with “How can you sit through so many bad movies?” The truth is I
just do it. However focusing primarily on home video and television does afford
a few advantages that make my job more comfortable. I can only imagine how Cult
Film Guru Joe Bob Briggs does it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he just dives
into it too. The guy made a career out of being the world’s best known and
only Drive-In Movie Critic with a keen wit that is only matched by the
encyclopedic knowledge of facts regarding the movies he comments on. In their
third collaboration, Elite Entertainment released “Joe Bob Briggs Presents The
Double-D Avenger” onto DVD-Video a few weeks ago. The film has been previously
available on home video directly through William Winckler Productions, but is
now widely available at retailers on and offline through Elite Entertainment.
Much the way the crew of the Satellite Of Love made watching all sorts of
b-movies fun to watch through their hilarious and eclectic comments on
television’s “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the hook to this Elite
Entertainment series is to hear what Joe Bob Briggs has to say about the movie
and unlike the writers at Best Brains Inc., Briggs genuinely gives an
appreciation for these films while sharing his observations and does not just
make fun of them or talk at the screen.
There are two types of people who
are going to buy or rent this DVD, those who love b-movies and those who enjoy
hearing Joe Bob Briggs comments. I fall into both categories, but for this title
I prefer to listen to what Briggs comments are going to be rather than watch the
movie straight through without it. I certainly would not watch it otherwise.
“The Double-D Avenger” stars Kitten Natividad, Haji and Raven De La Croix of
Russ Meyer film fame. The story has Kit journeying to South America to find the
mysterious Ta-Tas tribe who introduce her to a unique plant that gives her
extraordinary powers. When she gets back in the States, she faces off against a
band of murderous strippers. This might be the only big breast exploitation film
to not include any bare breast shots save for a few stills in a silly montage
that only serves to remind the viewer that these women are well past their
prime. At least we can ogle Sheri Dawn Thomas’s cleavage as it bumps up and
down in every scene she appears in while reciting the ridiculous dialogue
“Ooga Boobies” throughout most of the movie. There is a nightmarish sequence
where a stripper character does this “chicken dance” that defies explanation
even for a bad campy comedy like this.
As far as the commentary goes,
Briggs is livelier here than he was on “Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s
Daughter” with more words for breasts in one film than I’ve ever heard in my
life. This guy really does his homework too. He can discuss the filmmakers,
cast, and even how the film was made in humorous manner while still pointing out
the various absurdities throughout the picture. I hope the next collaboration
between Briggs and Elite Entertainment will be of one of their higher caliber
catalogue titles. I realize that part of the fun is hearing what Briggs has to
say about these obscure flicks, but so far neither disc has approached the
excellent commentary Briggs delivered on Elite Entertainment’s “I Spit On
You Grave AKA Day Of The Woman: Millennium Edition” DVD release. There are
some great genre films on DVD already available from Elite Entertainment and
Briggs has reviewed quite a few in print and on his now cancelled
“Monster-Vision” series that would not only be more attractive to Briggs’
fans, but to the DVD consumer that appreciates a good schlock flick and dare I
say it, may not know who Joe Bob Briggs is.
As far as picture and sound
quality goes, “The Double-D Avenger” is presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio
and looks like it was shot on HD rather than film. The picture quality is very
sharp and the English Stereo Soundtrack is also clear. There is a
behind-the-scenes documentary on the DVD that is longer than the movie (78:11),
which is not necessarily a good thing in this case. A trailer (2:25), TV spot (:
30), and a still gallery wrap up the extra features included on this DVD. Briggs
provides the voice bytes for the selections so when a viewer chooses something
from the main menu he or she will hear Briggs say, “Here we go!” Choose to
watch the film without Briggs’ commentary and you’ll hear him say,
“Believe it or not the film soundtrack!” Choose to hear the commentary and
Briggs will reassure you by saying “Good damn choice!” Otherwise the DVD
menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
As noted above, “Joe Bob Briggs
Presents The Double-D Avenger” is now available on DVD-Video at retailers on
and offline from Elite Entertainment.
