There are people who are blind and yet can see and people who can see and yet are blind. This is the essence of “Butterflies Are Free.” Starring in this dated yet wonderfully watchable film is Goldie Hawn as the zany hippie chick next store and Eddie Albert Jr. plays her blind neighbor trying to make his way through life. Academy Award® winning actress Eileen Heckart plays his well-meaning mother.

The setting is 1972 San Francisco; a city in transition that serves as the metaphoric backdrop for these inspiring characters who grow through the film. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment’s DVD edition of “Butterflies Are Free” features an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and a full-framed (1.33:1) transfer on the other side of the DVD. The picture quality is very clear especially considering the age of the film in fact I would say the transfer is great. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment struck a brand new high definition transfer and down converted the transfer for the DVD so this is by far the best looking home video edition of “Butterflies Are Free” to ever be commercially released in North America.  A two-channel English Monaural Soundtrack and optional English Captions and Closed Captions along with French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai Language Subtitles are encoded on to both single layered sides of the DVD.

The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate with bonus trailers that include the trailer for “Cactus Flower,” which wrap up the extra features on this DVD. “Butterflies Are Free” debuts on DVD-Video from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment on Tuesday, April 23, 2002.
