“The
Cardinal” follows a young priest across two generations of history from his
initial ordination as a priest to his election to the College of Cardinals. In
some ways the film reminded me a little bit of the Anthony Quinn film “The
Shoes Of The Fisherman,” but the scale of the feature is broader and darker in
tone. Warner Home Video’s DVD edition presents “The Cardinal” in a
beautiful anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) aspect ratio with a full and clear
English Dolby Surround Soundtrack and optional English Captions and Closed
Captions for the hearing impaired as well as French and Spanish Language
Subtitles.
The
extra features on disc two contains the 1991 feature length documentary
“Preminger: Anatomy Of A Filmmaker” (119:00) hosted by Burgess Meredith with
videotaped interviews by Vincent Price and Peter Bogdonavich. A vintage
“Making-Of” featurette (5:42) and the widescreen (2.35:1) theatrical trailer
(1:04) are also included along with a list of Otto Preminger’s film
highlights.
The
two discs come housed within a Digipack gatefold and handsome red, black, and
white cardboard slipcase. The menus are standard interactive still frames that
are easy to navigate. “The Cardinal: Two-Disc Special Edition” will debut on
DVD-Video on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 from Warner Home Video.
