I
have read that the upcoming remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” from New
Line Cinema is being presented as if the original film was just a dramatization
of what happened, but this new film is a document of what really happened to the
five young people on August 18, 1973. So if this is the case, I think this
documentary from MTI Home Video is an appropriate way to conclude my DVD
coverage of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series in anticipation for the
remake’s theatrical release on Friday, October 17, 2003 as well as a part of
my Halloween horror film DVD coverage for this year.
“The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait Revisited” is a documentary
featuring videotaped interviews with Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface), Edwin Neal
(The Hitchhiker), John Dugan (Grandpa), and Jim Seidow (The Cook) sharing their
own recollections about the making of the film including anecdotes and facts
regarding the casting, production, public reaction, and more covering the
notorious hammer scene and long production nights from the various points of
views of the cast as well how they got riled up on the set as the hours went on
and on. This is a great companion to the Pioneer Special Edition DVD release
since it gives more background regarding the film, including some of the deleted
scenes as well as where the cast was in their careers at the time the
documentary was shot.
Unfortunately
the documentary was shot on analogue video so the picture quality reveals video
noise and generally the image look soft. The English Stereo Sound is clear, but
rather loud so since they intercut between interviews clips with scenes from the
film, I recommend lowering the volume a bit on your home theater systems.
Extra features include select cast and filmmaker credits, a trivia game,
the theatrical trailer for the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” as well as
a trailer for this documentary and 3 bonus preview trailers for other titles
available on DVD-Video from MTI Home Video.
The menus are animated with full motion scene selections and are easy to
navigate.
“The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait Revisited” is available on DVD-Video
now at retailers on and offline now from MTI Home Video.
