Wow,
what a disappointing movie! It is not that “Children Of The Night” is a bad
horror film because it is perfectly watchable as is, but considering the movie
was made by Fangoria Films, the leading mass market newsstand horror fan
magazine bar none, and the film was directed by Clive Barker disciple Tony
Randel (Hellbound: Hellraiser II) this is a rather derivative film that is less
scary than some TV movies produced each year. Released in 1991, the film stars
Peter DeLuise, still sporting his “21 Jump Street” hairdo as a schoolteacher
who teams up with teenage girl and the local small town wino (Garrett Morris) to
defeat a master vampire and his legions.
A
standard Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment release, “Children Of The
Night” is presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio. On the back of the DVD keep
case and before the film opens there is a brief blurb stating the film has been
modified to fit standard four by three televisions, but I am not sure if this
film ever even saw a theatrical release in America let alone anywhere else and
if so I cannot state whether or not the film was matted for theatrical release
or indeed this is a pan and scan presentation so just upon face value, I’d say
the transfer is better than average with only a small bit of grain, but nothing
outstanding. A clear English Stereo Soundtrack with optional English Captions
and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired as well as Korean and Spanish
Language Subtitles are encoded onto the DVD as options.
Bonus
trailers for “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (2:35), “John Carpenter Presents
Vampires Los Muertos” (2:07), and “The Forsaken” (1:58) are also included.
The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“Children Of The Night” will debut on DVD-Video from Columbia TriStar Home
Entertainment on Tuesday, August 12, 2003.
