Artisan is releasing a batch of standard movie only DVD releases from the Republic Pictures catalogue for the first time ever. Among the titles is “Copacabana.” Groucho Marx and Carmen Miranda star in this musical comedy as an aspiring show business couple desperately in need of a break until Marx decides to be his fiancée’s agent and successfully books her into the Copacabana nightclub. When the manager of the club asks Marx for more acts, he has Miranda play several different women using various disguises, but how long can his scheme last?

Groucho Marx has the best lines in this wonderful comedy and musical. Carmen Miranda at times looks just radiant and she is a great comedic foil for Marx. Marx and Miranda are classic Hollywood icons of an age long since past. I applaud Artisan Entertainment for bringing “Copacabana” to DVD-Video so that new generations can discover these personalities for years to come. Presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio with a beautiful black and white picture that has been digitally restored to remove as much flecks and dust as possible. The image still has a few anomalies and sometimes there is a bit of a shimmering effect on some of the pattern jackets Groucho wears, but overall “Copacabana” has never looked better on home video. An English Dolby Digital 2.0 Monaural Soundtrack is included with optional English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired.

The menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Copacabana” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 for the low suggested retail price of $14.98 from Artisan Home Entertainment.
