Li
Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) returns to 19th Century Beijing after spending time living
as a monk in a monastery. Unable to achieve enlightenment even when it was
within his grasp, Li Mu Bai has returned to resolve his previous life as a
venerable master warrior by meeting up with his former companion and lover Yu
Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), who is also master of a special martial art that takes
the master into a high and deep state of meditation and literally temporarily
alters the practitioner's physical being so that he or she can perform acts that
defy the laws of gravity and physics as he understand them. Li Mu Bai gives Yu
Shu Lien his sword, The Green Destiny, and informs her to give it to his former
master. Meanwhile Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi), a young aristocrat being groomed for an
arranged marriage that she wants no part of, is hiding her own secret
allegiances and her own romantic past. Jen Yu becomes involved in the theft of
Li Mu Bai's sword and reveals her own martial arts skills that astound both Li
Mu Bai and Yo Shu Lien. Determined to find out who her master is and who has The
Green Destiny, Li Mu Bai, Yo Shu Lien, and Jen Yu head into a battle
orchestrated by a true phantom menace with deadly consequences and broken
hearts.
"Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is an amazing motion picture. Though at times a bit
slow, the overall effect and combination of martial arts action, intrigue, and
fantasy is unparalleled on modern motion pictures. Chow Yun Fat shows a
different dimension to his acting ability and both Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi
solidify their presence as international film stars. Personally I think Zhang
Ziyi is one of the most beautiful actresses to appear in films from Asia and in
America too.
Columbia
TriStar presents "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to UMD in an
outstanding, but modified (1.78:1) anamorphic widescreen presentation. The
picture is flawless with no color bleeding or grain whatsoever. However the
version of the film presented on the UMD is not the same version presented on
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s DVD counterpart. Nearly 30 minutes of the
film has been edited out to fit the film on UMD with the best possible picture
and sound presentation. Personally I have mixed feelings about this. While I
love “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” the film can get very dull in the
middle act so streamlining it a bit for UMD is not necessarily a bad idea.
However for film enthusiasts looking for the complete film to watch while on the
go, you are better off with the DVD on laptop or portable DVD player. To
compliment the visual presentation, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment gives the
viewer three language choices to watch the film along with four subtitle
options. When you place the UMD into your PSP, the disc automatically defaults
to a Chinese Stereo Soundtrack with optional English Language Subtitles. You
must choose in the menu whether or not you wish to view the film in either an
English or French Language Dubbed Stereo Soundtrack. Korean, Spanish, and
Portuguese Language Subtitles are also encoded onto the UMD as options.
Bonus
preview trailers for “House Of Flying Daggers”, “Spider-Man 2”, and
“Steamboy” are included on the disc too. The interactive menus are fully
animated and easy to navigate. “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” is available
on UMD now for PSP at retailers on and offline courtesy of Sony Pictures Home
Entertainment.
