The
popular series “Crank Yankers” has arrived on DVD courtesy of Comedy Central
Home Video and Paramount Home Entertainment. The two-disc set features all ten
episodes from the first season, which introduced viewers to characters like
Gladys (Wanda Sykes), Elmer (Jimmy Kimmel), and the ever-popular Special Ed (Jim
Florentine). Think of it as the “Jerky Boys” meets the “Muppets” and
that will give viewers an idea of what to expect. Guest voices include Jack
Black, Billy West, Tenacious B, Denis Leary, Dave Attell, Super Dave Osborne,
Ween, and Kevin Nealon, who join other regular contributors Jordan Rubin, Adam
Carolla, Lisa Kushell, Tracy Morgan, Sarah Silverman, Dave Chappelle, Stephen
Colbert, Tony Barbieri, David Alan Grier, Sussie Essman, and Dane Cook. Even if
you are not familiar with the series, you have probably seen these comedians on
various television programs and heard them on syndicated radio shows like “The
Howard Stern Show,” which frequently airs calls by Jim Florentine and various
comedians from the show have appeared on Stern’s highly rated radio show as
“Friends Of The Show” too.
What
is interesting is the calls are all real and the show actually comes up with a
researched premise for the calls and then the talent executes it while a
creative staff works with the voice talent on creating the puppets and there is
even a documentary (25:55) on the second disc that gives the viewer a very
detailed insight into how it is produced complete with many of the comedians who
provide voices for the show and an extensive look at how the puppets are
interchangeably put together. In some ways I wish they did not show as much of
the behind-the-scenes action as they do because I prefer to just get lost in the
illusion than to associate the voice of who is speaking with the character.
Two
unaired calls entitled “Hadassah – Record Store” (4:37) and “Hermann
Gout – Horse Funeral” (3:38) are also presented as a bonus on disc two while
Comedy Central Quickies from “Chappelle’s Show – Anti Drug Commercial,”
“Reno 911,” and “South Park – Professor Chaos” are included on the
first disc as well as previews for DVD sets that include “South Park: The
Complete Fifth Season,” “The Hebrew Hammer,” and “Strangers With
Candy.”
All
ten episodes are presented in their original (1.33:1) broadcast episodes with
English Stereo Sound and English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired are
encoded onto both discs as options. “Crank Yankers Uncensored: Season One”
DVD box set is available now at retailers on and offline.
