Based
on the novel by Lois Duncan, this TV adaptation was directed by Wes Craven after
Producer Max Keller had screened his previous efforts “The Hills Have Eyes”
and “Last House On The Left.” The NBC version was entitled “Stranger In
Her House,” but with Craven’s developing career having already made him an
internationally known genre filmmaker, Craven cut the film with a few extra
minutes for international theatrical release. More of an occult thriller than a
straight horror film, Artisan Home Entertainment presents the international
theatrical cut of “Wes Craven’s Summer Of Fear” in the original (1.33:1)
aspect ratio in which the film was shot and the results are a surprisingly well
preserved and bright transfer. In addition the DVD features a very well mixed
and full sounding new English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack as well as
optional English Captions and Closed Captions encoded on to the DVD for the
hearing impaired. Wes Craven and Max Keller deliver a thoughtful and somewhat
screen specific feature length audio commentary as well.
Cast
and Director filmographies and sneak peek (1.33) trailers for “Wendigo”
(1:33), “Sleepless” (1:10), “Legion Of The Dead” (1:11), and “Hell’s
Gate” (1:14) wrap up the extra features included on this DVD. The main menu is
animated with motion dissolves to standard interactive still frame menus and all
are easy to navigate.
“Wes
Craven’s Summer Of Fear” will debut on DVD-Video from Artisan Home
Entertainment on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 for the low suggested retail price
of only $14.98 from Artisan Home Entertainment.
