Finally after six months I have decided to open my Quick Views Section at GENRE ONLINE.NET with this review of Warner Home Video’s Warner Brothers Cult Camp Classics: Vol. 4 – Historical Epics, which features the films Land Of The Pharaohs, The Colossus Of Rhodes, and The Prodigal. This section in style and content will evolve, but since I have yet to get started on it until now I have decided to just do it and go from there. These Quick Views will be short reviews designed mainly so that I can cover more home video titles in less time. So you won’t get the lengthy discussions you’ll find in my regular DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray Disc reviews as well as my TV reviews and GENRE ONLINE.NET Interviews, but you will hopefully get a quick idea of what the video is about, what it includes, and what I thought along with whether or not it is available at retailers yet. I invite feedback on how I can streamline this new section further. You can e-mail me with “suggestions” in the subject line at genre_online@hotmail.com. Now here we go.

These are films that I recall seeing on TV on a Sunday or during a holiday weekend. All three are beautifully mastered for DVD with anamorphic widescreen scope aspect ratios and feature cleaned up English Stereo Surround Soundtracks with the exception of The Colossus Of Rhodes, which has an English Mono Soundtrack. All three also feature English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and English and French Language Subtitles as options too. Howard Hawks Valley Of The Pharaohs surprisingly enough seemed like the dullest of the bunch because it really doesn’t start to get interesting until half way through. However the famous ending is worth seeing and perhaps is what earned the film a place in cult film fans’ hearts. The theatrical trailer (4:14) and an audio commentary with Filmmaker and Historian Peter Bogdanovich mixed with excerpts of comments by Howard Hawks are offered here. The Colossus Of Rhodes is perhaps the best looking of the three films included in the set and it along with The Prodigal are MGM films that are now a part of the Warner Home Video library. Noteworthy about this film is it is Sergio Leone’s (Once Upon A Time In The West) first feature film and the DVD features a feature length audio commentary with Film Historian Christopher Frayling and the obligatory theatrical trailer (2:26). Finally and arguably the best of the films in this set is The Prodigal, which is I believe loosely based on the Bible story. I have not read or heard the tale as it is written in a long time so I am not sure how faithful the movie is. Sometimes the film can be unintentionally funny, but the ending is poignant. This DVD features an audio commentary by Film Historian Dr. Drew Casper and the film’s theatrical trailer (4:02). These epics run at 104 minutes, 128 minutes, and 112 minutes respectively.

Collectively they represent a good value for collectors and are available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Warner Home Video.
