“Darkwolf”
is like “The Terminator” with werewolves instead of cyborgs. That is not to
say that it is as well crafted a low budget film as the original “The
Terminator” was because it is not, but it also is far from being a dud. In
fact when I first saw the film I described it as being “A Howling Mix Of Sex,
Gore, And Thrills!” and I still stick by my recommendation. The Darkwolf (Kane
Hodder) is a hybrid lycanthrope out to mate with the last pureblooded female
werewolf so that it can procreate and dominate the world. The film features
cameo appearances by Steven Williams (21 Jump Street and The X-Files) and
Hitchcock alumni Tippi Hedren. The film was shot using high definition 24fps
digital video and while not quite the state of the art as George Lucas’
“Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones,” the feature looks as though
it was shot on film and consequently the DVD transfer looks great with a near
flawless anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) aspect ratio presentation and a good
English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack coupled with a Spanish Language
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and English Captions and Closed Captions
for the hearing impaired as well as French and Spanish Language Subtitles as
options.
The
makeup effects are not state of the art, but they are better than the rather too
CGI looking computer generated transformation and werewolf effects. The extra
features include a “Making Of Darkwolf” featurette with some technical
retrospective videotaped interviews with the Director, screenwriter as well as
cast interview clips from the production set. There’s also a gag reel and the
trailer for “Darkwolf” along with trailers for other titles available on DVD
from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment that include “From Hell,”
“The Fury,” “The Omen,” and “Phantom Of The Paradise.”
The
menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
“Darkwolf” is available on DVD-Video now from Twentieth Century Fox Home
Entertainment and is definitely worth checking out.
