Kevin
Williamson got his semi autobiographical series on the air through The WB
Network after the success of the “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last
Summer” horror pictures revitalized the slasher sub genre in horror films for
a few years. The series has Williamson’s signature self referential writing
style and presents four teenagers with lots of dreams, lots of angst, and a
bizarre wisdom at times that appears way beyond their years. Yet the series was
a big hit for The WB Network and made the faces of James Van Der Beek, Michelle
Williams, Joshua Jackson, and Katie Holmes recognizable for some even if they
had no clue these were a bunch of kids from a TV drama. On the other hand, I
have no doubt that pre-teenage girls and fans of melodramatic teenage dramas
know who most if not all of these young actors are now.
Filmed
on location in Wilmington, Durham, and Raleigh. North Carolina, the series has a
golden look to it that comes off fine in all 13 season one episodes that are
presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio. The picture quality is rather soft at
times and there is a noticeable amount of video grain from the masters used for
the digital transfer. The English Dolby Surround Soundtrack is clear though not
very full. English Captions and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired and
Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean Language Subtitles are encoded onto all three
dual layered discs as options. Executive Producers Kevin Williamson and Paul
Stupin provide episode length commentary for the pilot and season finale
episode. While I found the commentary foe the pilot to be interesting, I
couldn’t sit through the whole commentary for the season finale. It just gets
rather dull after awhile.
Within
the 3-disc Digipack gatefold is an insert with a short synopsis for each episode
included in the set as well as episode specific credits for all 13 installments
of season one. There is a retrospect featurette entitled “Dawson’s Creek:
From Season One” (8:23) that features promotional interviews with select cast
members during the show’s first season of production as well as what appears
to be newly recorded interview clips with Executive Producers Kevin Williamson
and Paul Stupin. This is supported by a “Season One: Time Capsule”
featurette (6:53). Optional Korean Language Subtitles are available for both
featurettes, but no other language subtitle options are offered. I guess
“Dawson’s Creek” has a huge Korean fan base…
Widescreen
(1.85:1) trailers for “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (2:07) and
“Go” (2:33) are paired with (1.33:1) trailers for “Dick” (2:33) and
“Lone Star State Of Mind” (1:45). The first three trailers feature full
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks while the last trailer has an English
Stereo Soundtrack. The menus on all three discs are standard interactive still
frames that are easy to navigate.
This
DVD set is geared towards the fans of the series and they should be happy with
it. “Dawson’s Creek: The Complete First Season On DVD” box set is
available now from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.
