Maybe
I’m wrong, but how real is a celebrity roast if the celebrity executive
produced it? I mean that is like throwing your own birthday party and then
acting as if it were a surprise. I like Denis Leary. I remember seeing him on
MTV’s “Half Hour Comedy Hour” when I was in college and have seen a few of
his films so it is no surprise for me that the “Uncensored” Denis Leary
roast is funny, but when you’ve got the guests reading their jokes and
putdowns off of a teleprompter and Leary behaving as if he wrote his rebuttal
ahead of the show with full knowledge of what his guests were going to say it
kind of loses something. Now I am not saying that the roast was not spontaneous,
but it sure seemed like it was very rehearsed at times. This aside there are a
few funny bits and ton of guests that include Roasters Mario Cantone, Lenny
Clarke, Dane Cook, Nick DiPaolo, Doctor Dre & Ed Lover, Adam Ferrara,
Gilbert Gottfried, Colin Quinn and host Jeff Garlin as well as tributes by
Michael J. Fox, Peter Gallagher, Joe Mantehna, Conan O’Brien, Jon Stewart,
Christopher Walken, and an unforgettable gag by Rene Russo. Actress Gina Gershon
performs a song for Denis while Comedian Jim Breuer sings Leary’s
“Asshole” song.
Bonus
features include Leary’s uncut rebuttal (22:51), Red Carpet Outtakes (3:12),
Dr. Dre and Ed Lover’s segment uncut (4:09), and unaired footage of Patrice
O’Neal pretending to be Ruben Studdard (2:02). TV spots from “Chappele’s
Show” (2:01), “Crank Yankers” (2:18), and “South Park” (1:42) are also
included among the other bonus features.
“Comedy
Central’s Roast Of Denis Leary: Uncensored!” is available now on DVD-Video
