This
1998 TV movie executive produced by Wes Craven is an adaptation of a novel he
wrote. The story explores the terrible anxiety associated with acrophobia after
a woman looses her sister while her husband was photographing her close to the
edge of a scenic, but never the less very dangerous cliff. Though her sister’s
death appears to be an accident, our protagonist begins to hear voices and
hallucinate that her sister is coming back to get revenge upon her for letting
her fall. When members of her experimental acrophobia therapy group begin to
turn up dead, she must find out if the cause is truly supernatural or foul play.
The
cast includes two veterans from other Wes Craven inspired productions. Aaron
Smolenski appeared in “Wishmaster 3: Beyond The Gates Of Hell” and Tara
Spencer Narin can also be seen in “Wishmaster: The Prophecy Fulfilled,”
which are both available on DVD-Video now from Artisan Home Entertainment.
The
DVD presents “Don’t Look Down” in the (1.33:1) aspect ratio of the
original television broadcast and the transfer is very bright and vibrant with
no MPEG-2 compression grain and the English Dolby Stereo Soundtrack is clear and
full sounding. English Closed Captions are encoded on to the DVD as an option.
There are no other extra features encoded on to this DVD. The menus are standard
interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.
The
cover art for this DVD looks great, but don’t look at the insert scene
selection list within the case since it will spoil the entire film for you. The
suggested retail price of $19.98 is high considering this is a movie only DVD so
unless you are a huge Wes Craven fan and have to have everything his name is
associated with or loved the book and TV movie, I recommend this more so as a
rental. For what it is, I found this to be an above average TV movie thriller.
“Wes
Craven Presents: Don’t Look Down” is available on DVD-Video now from Artisan
Home Entertainment.
