“Drum
Line” is an entertaining film that is somewhat educational too. Nick Cannon
stars as a gifted street drummer who gets a scholarship and snares a top spot at
a Southern university marching band where he learns the value of team work,
compassion, and drive are among the many facets he will need besides his talent
to follow his musical dreams.
As
derivative as the basic premise sounds, I found “Drum Line” to quite
original and entertaining with crossover appeal that transcends racial and age
boundaries. Orlando Jones does a great job toning down his comedic talents to
deliver a straight dramatic performance and the cast is more of an ensemble of
talented young men and women who prove that just because the football game is in
halftime, it doesn’t mean the show and the competition is over. Director
Charles Stone III delivers an articulate screen specific feature length audio
commentary as well as optional audio commentary for the 10 letterboxed (2.35:1)
deleted scenes included on this disc. The 30-minute BET “Making Of Special”
is included along with the music videos for “I Want A Girl Like You” by Joe
featuring Jadakiss and “Blowing Me UP (With Her Love)” by JC Chasez as well
as a CD Soundtrack spot and a (2.35:1) trailer for “Antwone Fisher.”
The
picture quality for the feature film presentation as well as the BET special and
music videos is excellent and the English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack
has a great beat and is well mixed. “Drum Line” is presented in an
anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) aspect ratio that preserves the way the film was
exhibited theatrically as close as possible for home viewers. Optional French
and Spanish Language Dolby Surround Soundtracks and English Captions and Closed
Captions for the hearing impaired as well as Spanish Language Subtitles are
encoded on to the dual layered DVD too.
This
is a great movie that should not be missed. “Drum Line” is available on DVD-Video
now from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
