Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn is like Army Of Darkness after it, a sequel that does not entirely fit in with the original continuity wise, but never the less is still a continuation of the hapless Ash (Bruce Campbell) from the point where we see him being pushed through the tree branches. My understanding is for whatever reason; they could not use footage from the original film so in giving the second film a new beginning it enables people to enjoy the film without having to see the original. Like George A. Romero’s “Living Dead” series, The Evil Dead trilogy of films has rabid fans that each has their own favorite in the series.

The Blu-ray Disc encoded with an AVC codec and featuring uncompress PCM 5.1 Surround Sound looks and sounds pretty sweet for a twenty year old low budget horror flick. One can appreciate with even greater detail now the various textures and colors of blood and slime that are a character within the film itself.  The picture is also cleaner and brighter than the THX certified DVD version and the English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack mix seemed a bit different too with certain sound effects like the yipping “Rotten Apple Head” demon sounding a bit more subdued than the previous version. Whichever track you use to watch the film, both surround soundtracks are definitely a blast though with a nice full use of the front and rear surround channels. English Subtitles For the Deaf and Hearing Impaired are encoded onto the disc too along with an Blu-ray Disc exclusive anecdote filled fun trivia text commentary track too.

Still the best part in any optical media disc format is the feature length audio commentary with Writer-Director Sam Raimi, Star Bruce Campbell, Co-Writer Scott Spiegel, and Special Make-Up Effects Artist Greg Nicotero. These guys are having a ball and make listening and re-watching the film again just as enjoyable as watching the film with the film's normal soundtrack. An interesting narrated photo gallery entitled “Evil Dead 2: Behind The Screams” (17:06) with Tom Sullivan is included too.

A 31 minute featurette entitled "The Gore The Merrier" is included and features behind the scenes videotaped footage from the set of Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn" and the KNB Effects Group Specialists sharing anecdotes about the film's production. The theatrical trailer (1:25) and a Blu-ray Disc spot (: 59) wrap up the bonus features. The interactive menus are well rendered and easy to navigate.
