Adam
Glasser was born in Brooklyn, New York and eventually moved out west where he
became a personal trainer. In 1991 Glasser produced his first Adult Film under
the pseudonym “Seymore Butts” and now he runs an adult entertainment company
that he quotes in one of the second season episodes of “Family Business” as
being more profitable than the NFL, NBA, NHL, and Major League Baseball
combined. That might sound far-fetched, but it is probably more than true.
Despite the current political climate in this country, which appears to demonize
anything that it deems immoral, the Adult Film Industry is at least twice as
profitable as mainstream Hollywood with approximately seven billion dollars
earned in 2004 alone. Now for a business to earn that kind of money one has to
ask, if it is so wrong, then why is it doing so well? Someone has to be
purchasing merchandise in some form and seven billion dollars is a lot of money
for someone to dismiss. Adult entertainment has gone mainstream with Adult Film
Stars hosting cable/satellite programs on basic networks as well as appearing in
cameos in mainstream features films, television, music videos, and radio. You
might not recognize them with their clothes on, but they are out there. However
“Family Business” is not a reality series about the Adult Entertainment
Industry so much as it is a profile of a single father juggling his professional
and personal life while searching for a lasting relationship of true love. Now
that sounds like the story of every man and woman in twenty-first century
America. The hook of this show though is the fact that Glasser runs a highly
recognizable brand name in adult films and merchandise.
Sex
sells and it must sell well because a lot of the women who make their living
performing in adult films and whatnot look so beautiful that one almost cannot
believe that they have to do this for a living. However as can be seen in the
second season episodes of “Family Business,” these women choose to earn
their living by having sex on film and some have become multimillionaires in the
process. Obviously this is not for everybody, but then again nothing in this
world for everybody. Some people thrive in an office environment while others
prefer to work on the road. In the episode “Topless In Tampa,” the outspoken
Cousin Stevie, who is the Operations Manager for Adam and handles the
distribution side of the family business, is tasked to look after things while
Glasser attends a convention in Florida and the experience teaches him that he
does not want to be a boss like Adam. Cousin Stevie is the breakout star of the
show in part because of his misadventures coupled with his frequent use of four
letter words to enunciate his emotions. Adam’s mother Lila is the bookkeeper
as well as a matchmaker of sorts for Adam whether he likes it or not. She means
well though and all she really wants is for her son to find the right woman, get
married, and be happy. Adam also has a beautiful son named Brady who is truly
the light of his life.
Personally
I think Adam is pretty happy as it is and by the end of season two the former
office worker who made the jump before the cameras under the name Maripossa
enters into a romantic relationship with Adam. Other people who appear in and
around the family business is Bishop, who in season two directs his first adult
feature and gets taught a lesson in practical jokes by Adam, and adult film
stars Hershel Savage, Jessie Jane, and Ariana Jolie to name a few.
All
ten season two episodes are presented their original (1.33:1) broadcast aspect
ratio with a choice of either a clear and full English Dolby Digital 5.1
Surround Soundtrack or an English Stereo Soundtrack. A Spanish Language
Two-Channel Monaural Soundtrack and English Closed Captions for the hearing
impaired are also encoded onto both discs as options. The interactive menus
feature a full three-dimensional set mockup with animated transitions to full
motion scene selection menus and all are easy to navigate. The scene selections
are cleverly labeled as “For-Play,” “Heavy Petting,” “Main Event,”
and “Climax.” My only caveat is that the episodes can only be viewed
individually. I would have preferred a “Play All” feature rather than having
to navigate through each episode individually. I also think an audio commentary
for some of the episodes featuring Adam, Cousin Stevie, Bishop, and whoever else
would want to participate would have added greater value to the two-disc set as
a whole. Some TV interstitials with select cast members are included on disc two
under the heading “Family Business Shorts.”
