I remember when
Fangoria magazine first appeared on newsstands. It featured pictures from films
like “Phantasm,” “Friday The Thirteenth,” and “Prophecy: A Monster
Movie” among others. I was still in grade school and would love to read Famous
Monsters Of Filmland and Starlog, but Fangoria was the only magazine I can
remember that ever gave nightmares from just viewing the images and yet I could
not resist staring at the photos and seeking out the movies as they appeared on
HBO and home video since back then theaters were strict about not letting kids
under 17 into an R rated film without a parent or guardian. Over the years I
have always considered myself a science fiction fan and still am very much, but
I have to admit that the horror genre has certainly matured and were it not for
Fangoria magazine many genre films and their respective filmmakers would
probably not have gotten the notoriety they enjoy today. In my opinion Fangoria
has had as much of an impact on horror films as “Star Wars” has had on
contemporary sci-fi films and television. When I was a kid it was easier to find
Starlog on newsstands than Fangoria and now I can’t find Starlog at all, but
Fangoria is available in just about any magazine shop I visit. So I am surprised
the “Blood Drive” did not start sooner because how many people out there
working in films and television now were not inspired to produce horror pictures
by what Fangoria introduced them to already?
Now anyone can see
the winners of the Fangoria Blood Drive on Koch Vision’s recently released DVD.
Viewers can check out all the winning films presented in either a letterboxed or
full screen aspect ratio, depending on how the films was shot, either
individually or as one reel (59 minutes) and the disc also features
approximately 60 minutes of bonus materials that include a lengthy interview
with Stan Winston and Clive Barker discussing his ABARAT series complete with a
look at his painting studio. I sure wish Barker would direct a new feature film
adaptation of his fiction. Rob Zombie participates as the host throughout all of
the interactive menus as well some bloopers during the DVD credits.
While not all of
the films caught my eye, in fact some disappointed me, the musical “Song Of
The Dead” created by Chip Gubera was truly inspired and was my personal
favorite. “Fangoria Blood Drive” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers
on and offline courtesy of Koch Vision and don’t forget to visit Fangoria’s
official website at www.fangoria.com.
