“Father Of The Pride” came out around the same time when there was a much publicized accident involving Siegfried & Roy and one of them getting mauled by a lion or something. So I remember the media focusing more on that and even some people making some locker room humor type jokes about the accident more than I remember hearing anything very positive about the series. I suppose it was bad timing or something else, but generally speaking it is extremely difficult to have a successful animated series on primetime non-cable/satellite television. The only network to have succeeded on any long-term primetime scale is Fox and that network has had its share of flops too.

At it’s best, “Father Of The Pride” is mildly cute to watch, but it is not really that funny and the CGI is not quite up to the standards of DreamWorks’ theatrical counterparts. The voice cast that includes John Goodman and Carl Reiner do a lot to bring real personality to their animated counterparts, but after awhile I found the show to look like a bunch of toys moving around and the storylines just never caught my interest. DreamWorks Home Entertainment has done an amiable job with this DVD release that includes all 14 produced episodes, three of which never aired on network TV. The picture quality couldn’t be better on DVD with a sharp anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) aspect ratio and a full English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack for all of the episodes except the original unaired pilot. An English Dolby Surround Soundtrack and English Captions for the hearing impaired as well as English, French, and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded onto the DVD as options too.

Bonus features includes a voiceover introduction for the original unaired pilot with Rob Cohen, Jonathan Groff, Cheryl Holliday, John Pollack, and Jon Ross (1:24) as well as optional episode length commentaries for “The Thanksgiving Episode”, “Road Trip”, and the “Revised Pilot – Stage Fright.” A storyboarded episode that was never completed under the title “The Lost Tale” (24:37) is also included along with previews for “Madagascar” and “Wallace And Gromit” (5:28). The interactive menus are well rendered and easy to navigate.
