Two years have past since Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale) saved his ex-girlfriend and killed the vampire next door with the help of “Fearless Vampire Hunter” Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowell). Charlie has spent most of his time under psychiatric care convincing himself that the events of the first film never happened. It was all some kind of mass hypnosis his shrink tells him, but shortly after meeting Peter Vincent to confront his doubts, Charlie is soon seeing strange people moving into the neighborhood again. Regine Dandridge (Julie Carmen) is out to avenge her brother’s death with a brand new bunch of the undead helpers too.

Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season Of The Witch), “Fright Night Part II” does not have quite the same balance of horror and comedy that the original had though I can forgive that since combining horror and comedy is extremely difficult and it rarely works. The only other genre mixed with comedy that has probably an even worse record for success is sci-fi and comedy, especially with feature films. What I can’t forgive is the lousy pan and scan (1.33:1) transfer that is so grainy that I almost thought I was watching some low-grade videotape.

The English Stereo Soundtrack is a bit muffled too. English Closed Captions for the hearing impaired are encoded as an option, but there are no extra value bonus features at all. Artisan has done better work than this with bargain priced titles and the fans and consumers deserve better.  The interactive menus are very rudimentary, but easy to navigate.

For those who may have the first film on disc and would be happy to have the sequel on DVD too regardless of quality, “Fright Night Part II” is available on DVD-Video now at retailers on and offline from Artisan Home Entertainment.
