I
used to love watching Martin Short on Saturday Night Live in the mid 1980s and
really enjoyed his performance in the sci-fi comedy “Innerspace,” which was
directed by Joe Dante. The third season of “Primetime Glick” will premiere
on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 10:30PM (ET/PT) on Comedy Central and to
commemorate the series; Comedy Central Home Video is going to release “The
Best Of Primetime Glick” on DVD-Video. The DVD contains five episodes, which
can be watched individually or as one reel and stars Martin Short as Jiminy
Glick, a 300 pound buffoon of a talk show host who specializes on asking his
guests obscure questions, completely cutting them off in mid sentence,
unintentionally offending them, and having a complete disregard for any research
or notes on the stars he interviews. At least the infamous “round mound of
Hollywood” can cut a rug as viewers can see with the opening credits for each
show. Michael McKean almost steals the scenes he shares with Martin Short as the
deadpan bandleader with one heck of a tan. Among my personal favorite interviews
featured on the DVD are Glick’s in studio sit-downs with Eugene Levy, who
manages to be hilarious by giving only the most subtle reaction shots to
Glick’s bizarre questions and exclamations and Bill Maher, who also provides a
great studio guest with plenty of fodder for Glick and Maher alike, but poor
Jiminy, if he really wanted to ask some obscure questions regarding Maher’s
career, he could have asked him about his appearance on the late 1980s and short
lived sci-fi series “Max Headroom” starring Matt Frewer, who would also make
a great guest for the show too if he has not appeared on “Primetime Glick”
already. The Steve Martin interview is priceless as is his interaction with
Conan O’Brien.
Bonus
interview clips not shown during the original broadcasts include more with
Janeane Garofalo, Kathie Lee Gifford, Steve Martin, and Conan O’Brien. Comedy
Central Quickies TV spots featuring Glick interviewing Julia Louise Dreyfus, the
“Wild, Wild West Rap” from South Park, and a scene from Crank Yankers wrap
up the extra features on this DVD.
Guest
stars for the third season of “Primetime Glick” include Brendan Fraser, Ice
Cube, Jason Alexander, Lorraine Bracco, Mel Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Brad
Garrett, Jimmy Kimmel, Eric McCormack, John McEnroe, Megan Mullally, Tim
Robbins, Rob Schneider, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, and Elijah Wood.
The
