Nine
friends meet for a holiday weekend of partying and fun as well as reminiscing
over their past. However nothing is quite what it seems as secrets, desires,
fantasies, and confrontations bubble to the surface. “God, Sex & Apple
Pie” won six prestigious awards at film festivals worldwide and is now making
a DVD debut through Lightyear Entertainment, which is distributed in the U.S. by
Warner Brothers. I am not big on these somewhat risqué rehashes of “The Big
Chill” and God knows how many other drama comedies that have been made in a
similar manner over the past twenty years so I am going to skip my personal
thoughts about the film and focus on the technical aspects.
Presented
in a widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio “God, Sex & Apple Pie” looks
pretty good for an independently produced feature. There is no compression grain
and the colors are solid and vibrant. Overall the digital transfer maintains the
film quality quite nicely. The English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack
seems artificially raised to seem discrete and full when it is just simply loud.
Not a bad sound mix, but not a terrific one either, I suggest home theater users
lower their volume by at least five decibels than their normal preferred sound
level before playing this disc.
The
extra features include a reel of six deleted scenes and outtakes (7:49)
presented in a letterboxed (1.85:1) aspect ratio with Stereo Sound. The quality
of picture is significantly less than the feature presentation. Some rather dull
analogue video interviews with Actor/Writer/Producer Jerome Courshon (1:06),
Production Designer Colleen Devine (4:13) and behind-the-scene production
footage for the “Drinking Pictionary” scene (6:07) are included along with
the trailer (2:12). Web links to the www.GodSexApplePie.com
website and www.lightyear.com wrap up
the extra value features on this DVD. The interactive menus are well rendered
and easy to navigate.
“God,
Sex & Apple Pie” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 from
Lightyear Entertainment.
