A classic World War II action
thriller, “The Guns Of Navarone” is now available on DVD-Video courtesy of
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment as a part of the Superbit collection of
films on DVD. “The Guns Of Navarone” features Gregory Peck, David Niven
and Anthony Quinn as saboteurs assigned to infiltrate a Nazi-held island. The
film was an enormous success and garnered seven 1961 Academy Award®
nominations, including Best Picture, and was followed by a lackluster sequel in
the 1970s entitled “Force 10 From Navarone.”
While there are no extra value
features included on this DVD, this disc does feature an enhanced picture and
sound quality since nearly the entire contents of the dual layered disc is used
to create the best possible DVD-Video transfer available. The results are a
sharper and more focused picture with more defined background compositions and
whatnot. The film still looks like a movie produced in the early 1960s and at
times it has a shimmering quality, but the overall anamorphic widescreen aspect
ratio presentation looks very good. An English DTS Digital 5.1 Theatrical
Surround Soundtrack is also provided and while the new mix is quite good, I
would have to state that both the DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround options
sounded about equal in quality. English Captions and Closed
Captions for the hearing impaired and Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean,
Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai Language Subtitles are encoded onto the dual
layered DVD as options too.
“The Guns Of Navarone: Superbit” is available on DVD-Video
at retailers on and offline now.
