HATCHET
is an attempt at mixing old fashion horror flicks like Friday The Thirteenth,
but with grosser effects and gore and more humor, but unfortunately despite
whatever acclaim the film has received from other genre movie websites and
magazines, I found it completely uninteresting and not at all iconic. To be
blunt, it was done better before and didn’t need to be done again. I thought
the film’s creation Victor Crowley was little more than a bad Jason Voorhees
imitation and I am surprised the film got as wide a release as it did because
for a company that showcases some of the best cult classic and mainstream horror
on DVD today, HATCHET is at best a late night video rental or
cable/satellite TV view and that’s all. Anyone who knows me will tell you as a
film critic I hate writing bad reviews. As a matter of fact I have actually
called the companies at times that distribute these pictures and ask them to
tell me why they feel this film is as good as they claim it is with the hope
that maybe I’ll see the light and can write something positive.
All
I can say is that HATCHET has received a lot of great reviews from other
publications on and offline and perhaps this is the case where I am simply not
the right guy to have seen it. Sometimes you meet someone who just doesn’t
like you. You may never know why. It is just that way. I have nothing against
the filmmakers, distributors, and cast and horror icons like Tony Todd, Robert
Englund, or Kane Hodder. In fact I love Tony Todd, Robert Englund, and enjoy
Kane Hodder’s cameos in various films. I just could not get into this film. It
could be the time of year too. I am writing this just a few days away from the
Christmas holiday and if I wasn’t already passed a deadline on this, I would
have held off reviewing it. Is HATCHET really bad? No it is not a bad
film in terms of delivering what it promises and it is certainly better than
some of the TV movies I’ve seen on the cable channels. So my feeling is this, HATCHET
was made by a filmmaker with a passion for the genre and technically, Anchor Bay
Entertainment has produced a good DVD to support the home video release.
Despite
my feelings I think HATCHET is worth checking out by fans of the genre
and those curious or familiar with it already. Anyone else, all I can say is
like any other film, you will have to be the judge of how you feel about it
yourself. At the very least, considering I was not crazy about HATCHET, I
hope I have at least shown that I’m fair enough to realize that just because I
don’t like something doesn’t mean you won’t.
The
film is presented in an unrated director’s cut with a 16 by 9 widescreen
(1.78:1) aspect ratio. The picture at times seemed a bit grainy, but not
distractingly so. English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Surround
Soundtracks are encoded along with English Closed Captions for the Deaf and
Hearing Impaired as options. There’s a filmmaker and cast feature length audio
commentary, a documentary about the making of the film, (39:18), the creation of
the film’s signature character (9:25), a look at the effects (10:59), an
examination of one of the gruesome kill scenes from storyboards onward (6:21),
the filmmaker’s friendship with Dee Snider (8:33), a gag reel (3:43), the
theatrical trailer (1:49) and a reel of previews.
