The second season of Heroes was truncated like many popular network television series because of the Writers Guild strike. The second season starts off with some promise. Four months have passed since the events of the first season finale. Hiro (Masi Oka) is in feudal Japan where he meets the hero of the legendary stories he grew up with, Takezo Kensei (Former Alias recurring star David Anders) and discovers there is quite a lot more to the legend of Takezo Kensei than he ever imagined. Meanwhile the Bennet family is living on the lam as it were, hiding from the very company that once seemingly protected them, but Claire’s (Hayden Panettiere) developing relationship with a boy in high school who also has special powers and her desire to fit in put her and her father on target by the company and one of their own “special agents” with the power to manipulate electricity (Former Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell). Meanwhile Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) has discovered a threat to humanity in the form of a pandemic that he must prevent, but there is an assassin killing off the older generation of heroes and a former first generation hero that torments a little girl’s dreams and can effect perceptions with illusions that are nearly impossible to overcome. Meanwhile Sylar (Zachary Quinto) somehow has lost his super powers, but it doesn’t take him long to start getting them back and targeting some new ones, which include a brother and sister from south of the border seeking salvation from a terrible power the sister can unleash during moments of extreme emotion and it seems only her brother can help her control it or keep it at bay. Everyone is on target for another confrontation between the forces of good and evil in a graphic novel sort of way that includes yet another series of paintings from the late Isaac Mendez that foretells dire consequences and fates to come for select characters.

Since season two was originally supposed to be a normal length like the previous season, there are early episodes that develop new characters and add to the mythology of the show, but since then the threat of a Writers strike was on the horizon, characters are simply dropped or killed off and collectively with the original first season heroes, there simply became too many characters to keep track and the structure or story arc just seemed unfocused. While I like the art Tim Sale provides for the show, I think there are more creative ways to employ them into the storyline than just another bunch of the late Isaac Mendez’ prophetic paintings. I also think you can have a great good vs. evil storyline that doesn’t place New York and any other place under the threat of some form of annihilation so leave my city alone please!

Now available on Blu-ray Disc along with season one, Heroes is presented in a widescreen (1.78:1) high definition aspect ratio with a resolution of up to 1080p depending upon the capabilities of your TV or monitor. The colors are rich and bright with a high contrast and detailed textures. An English DTS Digital 5.1 HD High Definition Master Audio Theatrical Surround Soundtrack is provided and is a strong mix with good use of the rear surround channels, clear dialogue and an enveloping audio range. English Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and French and Spanish Language Subtitles are encoded onto the four Blu-ray discs as options too. Extra features include five featurettes spread across the four discs and all are presented in high definition. Included are fake documentaries about characters from the show like the legend of Takeo Kensei and there is also a featurette that explores how several scenes from the series are produced complete with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. There is also a teaser for the third season of Heroes, which will premiere on NBC on Monday September 22, 2008. (Please check your local broadcast listings for time and channel.)

Also presented in high definition are seventeen deleted and extended scenes as well as an interesting alternate ending. This is complemented by a presentation of lost character story elements that would have been integrated into the second season had the Writers Guild strike not occurred.  A gallery of art from the show’s second season by Tim Sale is also presented high definition.

Blu-ray Exclusive elements include Picture-In-Picture video interview clips and biographical information on the characters circa season two. BD Live features that include the ability to share favorite scenes and so forth are included as a developing option within the four-disc box set. There is an insert with instructions on how to control the interactive features too for those not familiar with U-Control capabilities.

Overall this is a solid Blu-ray Disc TV on BD box set that should please fans of the show and also demonstrates nicely the capabilities and possibilities this new high definition optical disc format has to offer. Heroes: Season 2 is available on Blu-ray Disc now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
