On the night of the lighting of the city’s annual Christmas tree ceremony, a virus infects and spreads across Manhattan faster than you can say mass transit strike and now you are one of a select group of individuals that are immune to the zombie plague and thus your blood and your dexterity are the only hope of containing and stopping the spread of this virus before the world as we know it becomes completely “Infected.”

Designed specifically and exclusively for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) game console, “Infected” is an exhilarating interactive gaming experience that is both funny and gross at the same time. The game play took a little getting used to because both sets of game pad buttons as well as analogue joystick built into the face of the PSP are used at the same time for game play and can make navigating a little different especially since bullets alone do not kill these creatures. You have to shoot them first in many cases where the infected are highlighted with a yellow like glow. Shooting the viral gun containing the concoction made from your immune blood can then destroy any zombie that is highlighted with a red glow regardless of whether or not you have shot them. This is also the only way you can kill them. Sometimes you can dispatch several infected by hitting one just right and cause a domino like effect where the antiviral splatter hits the others and causes them to explode as well. As the game progresses and you clean certain sectors you gain access to more sophisticated weapons, but you also face more threatening infected beings such as muscle bound giant zombies, berserkers, and infected that still retain knowledge of using various weapons like a chainsaw and whatnot.

“Infected” features interactivity options that allow players to host a game for up to eight players and go up against each other, even infecting each other’s game play and spreading and tracking the virus across the virtual world. There also different game modes including the soon to be infamous Mad Cow that is best seen with one’s own eyes rather than explained with text. I am not too big on the idea of getting infected in a virtual game world especially since I generally take longer than most to get the hang of a video game and games are far more sophisticated now than anything I grew up playing back in the day. Through finding an Ad-Hoc or local game or using infrastructure mode to find a game online, one can take on other players in deathmatches and gain upgrades too. You must have access to a wireless network or be within player range between respective PSP users in order to enjoy this feature. The disc also features automatic firmware upgrades for your PSP that are necessary in order to play and add functionality to the PSP web browsing, photo sharing, and music playing, as well as networking options. Songs performed by “Slipknot”, “Ill Nino”, “Trivium”, “Chimaira”, “Agony Scene”, “Pimp X”, and “Junkie XL” are among the wholesome and joyous holiday tune players have the option to listen to as they ring in the Christmas cheer and spread joy to the world by infecting it with this relentless interactive multiplayer zombie destruction action game. “Ho, ho, ho!”
