I
remember going through my “Heavy Metal” phase when I was about 14 or 15 and
“Iron Maiden” was of course a favorite along with a bunch of others I used
to listen to, but I never got to see them perform live other than some early
performance music videos. Now we have this recent double DVD release courtesy of
Columbia Music Video that was taped by 18 cameras and originally broadcast live
in 2001 on “DirecTV,” however this DVD release features a reedited version
to present a more theatrical quality for this explosive concert and tweaked with
a Full Rate DTS Digital 5.1 Theatrical Surround Soundtrack and a Dolby Digital
5.1 Surround Soundtrack that will make your floors rumble and the walls quake.
Though
some of the songs sound the same to me, there is no denying that “Iron
Maiden” is a band that rocks on DVD with a theatrical concert rarely seen
anymore and fantastic use of guitars and drums. Fan favorites like “The Number
Of The Beast” and “Run To The Hills” have to be seen and heard to be
believed on this DVD set. The video quality is also outstanding. There are no
captions on the first disc, which would have been great for those interested in
reading the lyrics. The songs
performed are:
Ghost
Of The Navigator
Brave
New World
Wrathchild
2
Minutes To Midnight
Blood
Brothers
Sign
Of The Cross
The
Mercenary
The
Trooper
Dreams
Of Mirrors
The
Clansman
The
Evil That Men Do
Fear
Of The Dark
Iron
Maiden
The
Number Of The Beast
Hallowed
Be Thy Name
Sanctuary
Run
To The Hills
The second disc features 6 short interviews with band members, a day in the life featurette, and a moving picture gallery narrated by Ross Halfin. The interviews feature English Captions and French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese Language Subtitles. The menus are nicely rendered, particularly the somewhat fierce if not scary appearance of the band’s namesake on disc two, which with the 5.1 Soundtrack can also make the floors rumble so be careful. The packaging is a gatefold within a thin cardboard slipcase with nice artwork, but the method by which the discs are held in their place is flimsy at best. While this is the first time I’ve listened to “Iron Maiden” in years, I have to say that not only was watching the concert and hearing the music a lot of fun, but it brought back fond memories of my youth and compared to most new rock bands I hear today, “Iron Maiden” not only has more heart, but a soul that makes me feel like what I am seeing is a true band and not just some corporate creation or enterprise. Not to say that these guys are not in themselves a business, but the members as they appear in the extra materials on disc two seem genuine and even down to earth.
If
you’re an “Iron Maiden” fan you probably already have this, but if you
have not yet bought this DVD, then go out and buy it now! “Iron Maiden –
Rock In Rio” is available on DVD-Video now from Columbia Music Video.
