“Jackass:
The Movie” was the natural evolution for the gang of “Jackasses” to take
their stunts after going as far as possible on MTV. The film earned $64 million
dollars in domestic box office receipts in spite of poor reviews from movie
critics. If anything a bad review of “Jackass: The Movie” only fueled the
interest of fans who know exactly what they were getting and probably did not
care what anyone said. Personally I like “Jackass” because it reminds me of
the stunts my friends and I used to pull in high school. Now mind you, none of
us ever snorted worms, skateboarded down stairwell banners, shot fireworks from
our rear ends, or swam in water with whale sharks and whatnot, but we did our
share of mad havoc and it was stupid, but fun. The enticing part of watching
“Jackass” is to see what these guys will do and believe me they do some
pretty disgusting things in this movie, but they also do a lot of hilarious bits
as well so as long as viewers know not to try these actions ever, sit
back, relax and enjoy the DVD.
“Jackass:
The Movie” is at it’s best when Johnny Knoxville and or one of his team
members go out into the unsuspecting world in some disguise and do candid camera
style gags like totally a rental car and returning it saying he hit a dog and
then watching the expression on the proprietor’s face when he tells them
it’s not his responsibility to pay for the damages, or dressing up as a senior
citizen and shoplifting an LA bodega stand with the intent of getting caught or
pretending to be on an out of control powered wheel chair only to proposition
the good soul who saves them with an offer of dinner for two. Gags from the
series such as “Party Boy” loose on the streets of Tokyo or golf cart crash
derby are repeated and there is the expected skateboard stunts and whatnot, but
they are pushed as far as possible for the big screen. Then there are the things
that could not be done on MTV like returning sex toys with fake blood on the and
asking for a refund or perhaps the grossest stunt where one of the jackasses
puts a car in his colon and goes to get an X-ray complaining he passed out at a
fraternity party the night before and just hasn’t been feeling right since he
woke up. The doctor’s reaction is
not what you will expect and yet it is priceless. Unfortunately depending on
one’s disgust threshold, “Jackass: The Movie” crosses the line with one
too many vomit scenes and some gags like pissing on a snow cone and eating it
are just too much.
The
DVD is probably the best way to view “Jackass: The Movie” because there are
plenty of stunts that never even made the film that in some ways are better than
what they did in the feature and there’s more. First off viewers get a feature
length commentary track Director of Photography Dimitry Elyashkevich, Director
Jeff Tremaine, and Johnny Knoxville who all discuss taking “Jackass” to the
big screen complete with some technical discussion of finding the right quality
video that could be projected on a big screen without looking like crap and that
could also be seamlessly be transferred to film for theaters without digital
projection capability. As a result the picture quality of “Jackass: The
Movie” is far superior to the TV series with the opening segment shot on film.
With the use of digital video and film flawlessly transferred to the DVD with an
anamorphic (1.85:1) aspect ratio and a choice of English Dolby Digital 5.1
Surround Sound that is surprisingly full and there is an English Dolby Surround
Soundtrack option included as well. English Captions and Closed Captions are
also accessible for the feature film presentation as well as many of the extra
features. The cast commentary is less structured and more comical with lots of
infectious laughter. The technical tricks of hiding cameras and whatnot are also
revealed. Overall both commentaries off a lot more for “Jackass” fans than
one might expect.
Other
features include the extra segments (27:52) that did not make it into the
feature with 19 additional scenes that incorporate Grocery Store Shop Jousting,
Pocket Ass Return, Ceiling Fan, Bullfighting For Dollars, Mustard Assault,
Preston Chases Wee Man, Party Boy Rockabilly, Poo River Pole Vault, Bamboo Boo,
Steve-O Nurse Shark, Phil Vs. The Alligator, Party Boy Rat Tail, Sand Vagina,
The Failed Ending, and more. These scenes can be viewed one at a time as one
reel. There is an additional Outtakes Reel (7:11) too just in case the extra
scenes were not enough.
The
MTV “Making Of Special” (24:35) is also included along with music videos for
“If You’re Gonna Be Dumb” by Roger Alan Wade (3:12) and “We Want Fun”
by Andrew W.K. (4:10). Eight promo spots (5:03) that include a soundtrack spot
and the theatrical trailer (1:11) presented in a widescreen (1.85:1) aspect
ratio with full 5.1 Sound is included along with a spot for “Jackass” the TV
series on DVD (: 53) as well as bonus trailers for “The Core” (2:31) and
“Extreme Ops” (2:26).
A
photo gallery and a poster gallery as well as humorous cast and crew biographies
wrap up the extra features on this DVD. The main menu is animated with motion
transitions to standard interactive still frames and all of the DVD menus are
easy to navigate. “Jackass The
Movie: Special Collector’s Edition” is a blast for fans of the series and
not a bad DVD by any means either. Check it out when it debuts on DVD-Video on
Tuesday, March 25, 2003 from Paramount Home Entertainment.
