“The Jerk” was Steve Martin’s first theatrical comedy and is largely a relic of the time in which it was made. Some of the humor simply doesn’t stand up to the test of time and film offers only a light smirk here and there. Martin plays Navin Johnson, the adapted and very dumb white son of a poor black sharecropper family whose eye glass invention makes him both a millionaire and later a homeless man. Bernadette Peters and Jackie Mason appear in the film and Director Carl Reiner appears as himself. The great Mabel King, best known to some from her role in the 70s classic sitcom “What’s Happening” also appears in the film as Martin’s mother.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment presents “The Jerk” with a clear, but not particularly outstanding anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) presentation as well as a brand new English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack mix that is a noticeable improvement over previous home video versions. Two-channel French and Spanish Language Monaural Soundtracks are encoded onto the dual layered DVD as options along with English Captions for the hearing impaired and French and Spanish Language Subtitles.

The extra value features are pretty weak with a ukulele learn and play along session (2:51) and then the opportunity to play the tune “Tonight You Belong To Me” along with the scene from the film (1:58). An odd extra feature entitled “The Lost Filmstrips Of Father Carlos Las Vegas De Cordova” (4:22) is also included along with the original theatrical trailer (2:31) and on screen production notes. A reel of previews (3:47) that include “The Big Lebowski: Special Edition”, “The Wedding Date”, “Father Of The Pride: The Complete Series”, and the first three seasons of “Northern Exposure” appear before the main menu. All of the menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate.

This is not much a special edition DVD as far as I’m concerned, but if you are a fan of the film and Steve Martin you can pick up “The Jerk: 26th Anniversary Edition” now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
