Well
it took about six months between the DVD release of Elite Entertainment’s “I
Spit On Your Grave AKA Day Of The Woman: Millennium Edition,” which included a
feature length audio commentary with Cult Film and Drive-In Movie Guru and
Author Joe Bob Briggs among a host of other extra value materials, but finally
the first in a series of films under the “Joe Bob Briggs Presents…” label
is being released by Elite Entertainment. “Joe Bob Briggs Presents Jesse James
Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter” is a B-movie horror western hybrid with a
largely forgettable cast and enough exposition to put an insomniac to sleep, but
the truth of the matter is most people are not buying this DVD for the movie as
much as they are to listen to Briggs commentary about the film.
Unlike
“Mystery Science Theater 3000” where the characters talk back at the screen,
Briggs manages to be funny without continually ranking on the film. Briggs is
actually far more respectful to the material than one might expect and I think
there is even a genuine sense that he really does like the film perhaps because
of its faults. What stunned me more so was his encyclopedic knowledge on
everything related to film including historical inaccuracies and biographical
information on the cast and filmmakers. Unfortunately Briggs can only be as
funny as the material he is talking about so his commentary on Elite
Entertainment’s “I Spit On Your Grave AKA Day Of The Woman: Millennium
Edition” was definitely funnier with more observations too however there are a
few gems such as his comments on the “out of shape” Indian attack scene and
the not so festering mortally wounded lug who will end up being Frankenstein’s
granddaughter’s (Yep the film is entitled “Jesse James Meets
Frankenstein’s Daughter”) man slave.
The
film itself is presented in an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) aspect ratio from
material provided by the National Film Museum, but if there was any restoration
done, I am not sure where because the print is pretty scratchy and the
two-channel English Monaural Sound is muffled. Yet I suppose this is part of the
charm of the feature since I for one was attracted to this title because of
it’s B-movie status and especially because I think Joe Bob Briggs is funny and
I wanted to hear what he had to say about it. I mean make no mistake, he is the
star and host of this new series complete with narrated menus choices, which are
easy to navigate and the film’s theatrical trailer is included too.
Well
I hope future entries in this series will cover more recent genre films or at
least a variety of genres, but regardless of what they may be I think Briggs
fans can count on some humorous and interesting comments, which is why I like
the DVD and hope you all will too.
“Joe
Bob Briggs Presents Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter” will debut on
DVD-Video at retailers on and offline on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 from Elite
Entertainment.
