Like
them or not, “KISS” has now been around for thirty years and to celebrate
this accomplishment, KISS performed live on stage with the Melbourne Symphony
Orchestra conducted by David Campbell with every participant in the show in
makeup and with a microphone for every musician to deliver the fullest possible
sound experience ever. The DVD is a document of the event complete with an
entire behind the scenes documentary on disc one following the band through
meetings with conductor David Campbell and through various rehearsals, TV
appearances, and a complete recording session performance with the Melbourne
Symphony Orchestra.
The
second DVD is actually the show as it was presented on pay per view with the
first act featuring the band performing solo, the second act brings in the
Orchestra for about five ballads, before going balls to the wall with a complete
rock and roll concert where the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performs to with
the band. Disc one has a running time of approximately 94 minutes and 27 seconds
while disc two has a running time of 112 minutes and 48 seconds. The complete
play list includes:
Let
Me Go Rock And Roll
Lick
It Up

The
discs come house in a two-disc Digipack holder with a 12-page insert within a
cardboard slipcase. The image is presented in a widescreen (1. 85:1) aspect
ratio for the entire two-disc set including the bonus features. The picture
quality for the concert is quite good, but the video quality for the band’s
appearance and performance on “ROVE LIVE!” (13:45) where they perform
“Sure Know Something” (4:19) has a shimmering to it that is distracting. The
actual performance can be viewed with or without watching the interview on disc
two. There are web links on disc two as well that can be accessed online
directly without the need of a DVD-ROM drive to the official KISS website www.kissonline.com.
The
English DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtracks are a glorious
improvement over the English Stereo Soundtrack that is included as well, but
there is little difference between the DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound quality
itself. The volume level appears to have been boosted up for both discs on this
release, which is fine if you want to play the concert loud, but if you are
watching the documentary elements or live in an apartment with thin walls, I
seriously suggest turning the volume about 10 decibels lower than you might
normally have your home theater volume set.
“KISS Symphony: The DVD” will available at retailers on and offline on Tuesday September 9, 2003. Congratulations to Charles delaVergne in Metairie, Louisiana and Dave Burgess, in Toronto, Ontario. They each have won a "KISS: Symphony: The DVD." Thank you for participating.
