Artisan
Family Home Entertainment in conjunction with Hallmark Home Entertainment is
releasing their first volume of digitally remastered “Laurel & Hardy”
short films to DVD. These films include the feature comedy “Sons Of The
Desert” (65:01), the Academy Award winning short “The Music Box” (29:45),
“Another Fine Mess” (28:42), “Busy Bodies” (19:49), and “County
Hospital” (19:19). These film
each have their own scene selections and are presented in (1.33:1) aspect
ratios. The picture quality still has a few flecks and whatnot, but the shorts
do look cleaner than I have seen them before. There is a new digitally
remastered English Monaural Soundtrack that is surprisingly free of analogue
hissing, crackling, and pops. The packaging states that the original 1.0
Monaural Soundtracks are included too, but this is slightly inaccurate. The
original monaural soundtrack is included for all five shorts, but it is
presented in a 2.0 fashion and not through the center channel. Besides being
slightly hollower in nature, the original monaural soundtrack seems less cleaned
up than the newly remastered soundtrack. English Closed Captions for the hearing
impaired are encoded onto the DVD too.
Extra
features include a featurette on Movie Mogul Hal Roach (10:04), a photo montage
(3:53), a photo gallery comparing the Los Angeles locations used in the films
with how they look today, a text listing of various “Laurel & Hardy”
clubs and text notes and bios on Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, and Hal Roach.
This
first volume of “Laurel & Hardy” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday,
August 19, 2003 from Artisan Family Home Entertainment.
