Remember
when you didn’t have to have MTV2 if you wanted to tune into “Unplugged?”
Remember when MTV actually used to focus on music instead of “reality
shows?” You know I used to think that I’d know I was getting older when I
would find myself preferring VH-1 over MTV, but without satellite television or
digital cable, that is the only way one can catch a few new music videos between
the “Behind The Music” documentaries on basic analogue cable. I really miss
“Unplugged” and dislike MTV’s programming changes over the last few years.
Some of the best unplugged concerts have included “Pearl Jam,” “REM,”
“Nirvana,” and “LL Cool J” among the many and if there ever was a litmus
test to demonstrate whether or an artist can sing and or play an instrument,
“Unplugged” is it.
Lauryn
Hill’s solo album “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” was released in 1998
when it debuted on Billboard® at number one and sold 12 million copies
worldwide. Grammy® Award Winning, American Music Award Winning® and Billboard®
Award Winning, Soul Train® Award Winning as well as MTV Video Music Award
Winning Artist Lauryn Hill recorded her latest album and this companion DVD-Video
on MTV2’s “Unplugged” and even with her voice sounding a bit raspy, she
still delivers a soulful and touching performance with such beautiful songs as
“Mr. Intentional” and “Oh Jerusalem” while mixing some poetic verse in
“War In The Mind.” She is a beautiful acoustic guitar player and comes
across very down to earth on screen in this taped live performance.
Recorded
in March of 2002, the CD was released in May and the DVD was released in June.
The image is presented in a beautiful (1.33:1) aspect ratio preserving the
videotaped aspect ratio of the original television exhibition. A vibrant English
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack is included along with a very clear and
dynamic sounding English PCM Stereo Soundtrack. I preferred the 5.1 mix because
it is just so much more full sounding, but both mixes are sound great.
The
menus are standard interactive still frames that are easy to navigate. “Lauryn
Hill: MTV Unplugged: No. 2.0” is available on DVD-Video now from Columbia
Music Video.
