Devlin has worked behind-the-scenes in some of the biggest popcorn films ever
made with movies like “Independence Day” and “The Patriot” among the
projects he has helped to bring to fruition. If you watch the sci-fi films like
“Stargate” or “Independence Day” in particular, it is no secret that the
fantastic cinema of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas among others heavily
influenced Devlin as a filmmaker along with feature film Director Roland
Emmerich. I think it might be safe to say that anyone who grew up watching
“Star Wars” and “E.T.” has a certain innate nostalgia for the early
films of Lucas and Spielberg.
This time around Devlin
along with Writer David Titcher and Director Peter Winther take inspiration from
“Indiana Jones” with this twenty-first century homage filled with fantasy,
action, and humor entitled “The Librarian: Quest For The Spear.” Flynn
Carsen (Noah Wyle) has been living the life of a professional student for 30
years and still lives at home with his mother (Olympia Dukakis), who
understandably wants her son to get a great job, get married, and move out.
She’s well meaning in her attempts to play matchmaker, but Flynn is so into
his books he just doesn’t have drive to get out into the real world and live.
Then when he is forced to graduate after obtaining numerous degrees, Flynn
becomes the unlikely candidate for a position as the Librarian for a secret
deposit of antiquities from all around the world. The Ark of the Covenant,
Pandora’s Box, and the sword Excalibur are just a few of the items he has been
hired to care for. When a secret ancient society bent on world domination steals
the Spear of Destiny, an indestructible artifact that pierced Christ’s body on
the cross and is said to make it’s wielder all powerful, Flynn discovers that
his job description doesn’t just end with caring for these sacred relics.
He must also quest for them if any should ever be stolen. Thus he goes on
an adventure to retrieve the spear and save the world, as we know it.
Kyle MacLachlan hams it
up a bit as the film’s lead villain while Wyle keeps his well meaning
character just innocent enough that we can enjoy his journey. Bob Newhart plays
his role straight and because of that he gets the most laughs in the film. The
sexy Kelly Hu (The Scorpion King) appears in the film too. This film, which was
shot in 24 frame digital, will also be presented in high definition with a full
orchestral score and over 300 digital effects in an attempt to make the viewing
experience at home truly theatrical. Light, but entertaining for the entire
family, “The Librarian: Quest For The Spear” will debut on TNT on Sunday,
December 5, 2004, at 8pm (ET/PT) with encores as follows:
