From
1922 through 1944 spanning from silent films to talkies “Our Gang” also
known as “The Little Rascals” were produced and released theatrically and
then all 221 films were released as a television series, which instantly became
a classic. Now Artisan Family Home Entertainment in conjunction with Hallmark
Home Entertainment is releasing a brand new DVD collection and as repriced the
already available “Volumes 1 & 2” DVD set for the low suggested retail
price of $14.98. The new DVD features 10 episodes including the silent episode
“Dog Heaven” and will carry a suggest retail price of $19.98. The previous
release sold separately features 8 episodes and two introductions for volume 1
(2:43) and volume 2 (2:58) respectively by none other than Leonard Maltin. The
collective 18 episodes are presented in a (1.33:1) broadcast aspect ratio with
English Two-Channel Monaural Sound. The new set also features optional English
Closed Captions for the hearing impaired too. The image quality is passable, but
not as sharp as one might hope. The monaural soundtrack is a bit clearer in
quality, but also suffers from the limitations of the source materials used.
Extra
features include a featurette on dog training tricks (10:25) on the original
two-volume DVD release and the new DVD features a documentary on Hal Roach
(49:03), the man who created “The Little Rascals,” with lots of vintage
footage featuring Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy as well as the Little
Rascals. There are also videotaped interview clips with the late Hal Roach, who
lived to be 100 years old, and admirers that include Steve Allen, Rich Little,
Robert Klein, Gale Storm, and Mel Brooks.
Bonus
DVD trailers for “Laurel & Hardy” (1:01) and “Dinotopia” (2:12) as
well as a “Hallmark’s Best” promo (2:28) are included along with notes on
select player from “Our Gang” and various facts and trivia. “The Little
Rascals DVD Collection” will join “The Little Rascals: Volumes 1 & 2”
on DVD sold separately on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 from Artisan Family Home
Entertainment.
