“Lost” was one of the best new television dramas to premiere on broadcast network television last TV season. The series is essentially a mystery drama with some sci-fi overtones and lots of intrigue. The story centers on a group of survivors from a plane crash who find themselves on a mysterious island filled with secrets that are both external and internal in terms of the characters and their back stories, which shows us in flashbacks who they were before ending up on the island and in certain cases how their paths interceded prior to the crash. Most often the survivors are not aware at all of any connection, but as the days turns to weeks, it becomes very clear that there arrival and survival is not mere chance, but possibly the work of unseen forces. Some of the character flashbacks reveal strange abilities that might be mistaken for something from the occult or supernatural. The island itself has a huge invisible predator, polar bears living in a tropical environment, and wild boars. As the series first season continues and we learn more about the main characters, we also come into contact with a castaway, played by Mira Furlan, who has been on the island for decades and might be insane as well as the existence of others living on the island with possible malevolent intent. There are also strange visions as well as whisperings from unseen people within the jungle, which makes the viewer wonder whether or not the survivors are in some sort of an experiment like lab rats. If anyone is remotely familiar with the movie “Cube,” then they might get an idea of the basic premise since that film has several characters waking up in an elaborate maze filled with traps. While upon their first arrival, it would seem as though they are all random victims, it becomes obvious that they are all there for a reason, which in part requires that they put aside their mistrust and work with each other to solve the mystery of the cube and escape.

In alphabetical order the ensemble cast of “Lost” includes Naveen Andrews, Emilie de Ravin, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Maggie Grace, Josh Holloway, Malcolm David Kelley, Daniel Dae Kim, Yoon-jin Kim, Evangeline Lilly, Dominic Monaghan, Terry O'Quinn, Harold Perrineau Jr., Ian Somerhalder, and Cynthia Watros and in addition to Mira Furlan, season one guest stars also include Michelle Rodriguez, and Robert Patrick. As one of the hottest shows to air last season on ABC along with “Desperate Housewives,” “Lost: The Complete First Season” is one of the most eagerly anticipated and best TV on DVD sets I’ve reviewed this year so far. While comparing these two shows is really more like comparing apples to oranges, from a product standpoint I’d state that the “Lost” DVD set is even better and definitely more well thought out than Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s “Desperate Housewives: The Complete First Season” on DVD box set. Collectively they are two of the best TV on DVD sets of 2005. What sticks out right away for me with the “Lost” set is that for those who might have never watched the show before and decide to purchase the season one DVD set, there is a less likelihood of having elements from the show spoiled for the viewer since most people do not listen to audio commentaries for a program until after they’ve watched it and even during the commentary tracks, the conversations for the most part stick within the context of the episode being discussed. A feature that surprised me for the audio commentary related to the two-part pilot with the commentators that include Executive Producers J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Bryan Burk is when they literally have the action freeze and through the branching capabilities of the DVD, we get to see some behind the scenes footage and then are returned right back to where we left off in the commentary. These vignettes cover behind the scenes set on location footage for the plane crash (: 23), the crashing engine piece that hit the ground very close to Actor Dominic Monaghan (2:19), looking through the cockpit (2:00), and the polar bear attack (1:08). Executive Producer Jack Bender and Co-Executive Producer David Fury along with Actor Terry O’Quinn, from the location on Oahu, discuss the episode “Walkabout,” which goes into the surprising background of O’Quinn’s character and is easily one of the most memorable episodes from the first season.

Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk share an audio commentary on disc two with Actor Dominic Monaghan for another well crafted episode from the series entitled “The Moth” while Co-Stars Maggie Grace and Ian Somerhalder discuss the controversial episode “Hears And Minds” with Executive Producer Carlton Cuse and Supervising Producer Javier Grillo-Marxvach. The remaining extra value materials are on disc seven and are actually three multi-part documentaries that can be watched individually or using a “Play All” feature. Under the heading “Departure” (104:26), viewers can enjoy a look at “The Genesis Of Lost”, “Designing A Disaster,” which shows extensive video footage from the opening sequence of the pilot, “Before They Were Lost,” which includes audition tape footage for the main cast members, “Welcome To Oahu: The Making Of The Pilot,” “The Art Of Matthew Fox,” which is a narrated featurette of beautiful panoramic photography Fox shot while on the set during production, and footage of “Lost” at Comic Con.

Under the heading “Tales From The Island” (57:37) is the “Lost On Location” featurette as well as Jimmy Kimmel’s visit to the set of “Lost” and backstage video performance footage with the shows fictional band “Driveshaft” shot for flashback sequences in the series. Finally under the heading “Lost Revealed” (34:39) are 3 unaired Lost Flashbacks, 13 deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and footage from a discussion at the Museum of Television and Radio. On disc one there are previews with 5.1 Surround Sound that can be viewed individually or as a whole (14:21) that includes “The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe”, a Buena Vista Home Entertainment TV on DVD spot, “Alias: The Complete Fourth Season” on DVD set, “Desperate Housewives: The Complete First Season” on DVD set, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, “Darkwater”, and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

All of the season one “Lost” episodes are presented in a pristine (1.78:1) aspect ratio enhanced for 16 by 9 televisions with an atmospheric English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Soundtrack and English Captions and Closed Captions for the hearing impaired encoded as options. The interactive menus for each disc are fully animated with a view of various set pieces on the island and all are easy to navigate.

“Lost: The Complete First Season” on DVD box set is available at retailers on and offline now courtesy of Buena Vista Home Entertainment and the series pilot is also available on UMD-Video for PSP from Buena Vista Home Entertainment too. One can also watch new second season episodes of “Lost” Wednesday nights at 9pm (ET/PT) on the ABC television network.
