“Lost” was one of the best new television dramas to premiere on broadcast network television last TV season. The series is essentially a mystery drama with some sci-fi overtones and lots of intrigue. The story centers on a group of survivors from a plane crash who find themselves on a mysterious island filled with secrets that are both external and internal in terms of the characters and their back stories, which shows us in flashbacks who they were before ending up on the island and in certain cases how their paths interceded prior to the crash. Most often the survivors are not aware at all of any connection, but as the days turns to weeks, it becomes very clear that there arrival and survival is not mere chance, but possibly the work of unseen forces. Some of the character flashbacks reveal strange abilities that might be mistaken for something from the occult or supernatural. The island itself has a huge invisible predator, polar bears living in a tropical environment, and wild boars. As the series first season continues and we learn more about the main characters, viewer may wonder whether or not the survivors are in some sort of an experiment like lab rats. If anyone is remotely familiar with the movie “Cube,” then they might get an idea of the basic premise since that film has several characters waking up in an elaborate maze filled with traps. While upon their first arrival, it would seem as though they are all random victims, it becomes obvious that they are all there for a reason, which in part requires that they put aside their mistrust and work with each other to solve the mystery of the cube and escape.

In alphabetical order the ensemble cast of “Lost” includes Naveen Andrews, Emilie de Ravin, Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Maggie Grace, Josh Holloway, Malcolm David Kelley, Daniel Dae Kim, Yoon-jin Kim, Evangeline Lilly, Dominic Monaghan, Terry O'Quinn, Harold Perrineau Jr., Ian Somerhalder, and Cynthia Watros.  Day and date with the DVD release of the complete first season of “Lost,” Buena Vista Home Entertainment also released an UMD-Video for PSP containing the pilot and some of the extra value featurettes found in the DVD box set

These featurettes include “The Genesis Of Lost”, “Designing A Disaster,” which shows extensive video footage from the opening sequence of the pilot, “Before They Were Lost,” which includes audition tape footage for the main cast members, “The Art Of Matthew Fox,” which is a narrated featurette of beautiful panoramic photography Fox shot while on the set during production, and footage of “Lost” at Comic Con. All of these featurettes are presented in a (1.33:1) aspect ratio while the two-part pilot is presented in a widescreen (1.78:1) aspect ratio with a pristine DVD like quality picture, English Stereo Sound that is even better when remixed into Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound through the use of an external sound and power docking station or input into a home theater receiver. Using Dream Gear’s I, Sound PSP Pro, the remixed surround sound coming from the UMD through the PSP was so potent that it actually made the speakers shake.

In addition there is fictional Oceanic Airlines commercial from the series, which is actually a commercial for the series’ cryptic website. Bonus trailers on the UMD include advertisements for Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s “Lost: The Complete First Season On DVD”, “ALIAS: The Complete Fourth Season On DVD”, an ABC TV spot for the second season premiere of “Lost”, and a theatrical trailer for the Jodie Foster thriller “Flight Plan.” The two-part pilot can be viewed individually or collectively. The interactive menus are nicely rendered, animated, and easy to navigate too.

Whether you are catching up on or revisiting the series on DVD, watching new second season episodes or on the go, now you can enjoy “Lost” just about anywhere with this UMD-Video for the Sony PlayStation Portable. “Lost: The Series Pilot Episodes: Part I & Part II” is available on UMD now at retailers on and offline courtesy of Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
