Philip
Seymour Hoffman gives a heartfelt performance as Wilson Joel, a successful Web
Designer whose wife committed suicide and subsequently left him a sealed note
that he has been unable to open as his life falls apart. To his
mother-in-law’s indignation, Wilson forges strange side relationships and even
tries to lose himself in a hobby, but all he succeeds in doing is introverting
himself to a point where his behavior becomes self destructive.
The
winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival,
“Love Liza: A Comic Tragedy” took five years to get financed and was shot in
24 days. The performances are all strong and the characters are offbeat, but the
film is more of a melancholy drama than a comic tragedy as the title suggests.
As noted above Star Philip Seymour Hoffman, Director Todd Louiso, and Writer
Gordy Hoffman deliver a feature length and somewhat screen specific, but is also
quite low key in tone. The picture is grainy, but this is a stylistic choice and
not an issue of the authoring. The English Dolby Surround Soundtrack is clear
and there are English Captions and Closed Captions and French, Portuguese,
Spanish, and Hindi Language Subtitles encoded as options.
The
(1.85:1) trailer for “Love Liza: A Comic Tragedy” (2:25) is included along
with bonus trailers for “Adaptation” (2:38), “Big Shot’s Funeral”
(1:58), and “Punch-Drunk Love” (2:33) along with select credits for Philip
Seymour Hoffman and Kathy Bates wrap up the extra features included on this DVD.

Liza: A Comic Tragedy” will debut on DVD-Video on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 from
Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.
