Rhino
Home Video is releasing two more episodes of the popular Comedy Central/Sci-Fi
Channel series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on DVD as a two-disc set. Both
of these discs were original broadcast in 1991 and 1993 respectively and feature
Joel Hodgson and his wisecracking robots Crow T. Robot (Voice of Trace Beaulieau)
and Tom Servo (Voice of Jim Mallon) ripping apart awful B-movies by adding their
dialogue, witty remarks, and jokes much to the dismay of the mad Dr. Clayton
Forrester (Trace Beaulieau), who is using them as the subjects for an evil
experiment to see if after marooning Joel above the Earth in the Satellite
Of Love, he can breakdown their will with bad movies and if successful,
subject humanity to them mercilessly and rule the world. Fortunately for Joel
and the robots and for the rest of the world, Joel and the robots have just
enough cleverness and sarcasm in them to survive the celluloid onslaught.
“Manos: The
Hands Of Fate” is a movie that is absolutely so bad that even Dr. Forrester
and his henchman Frank feel guilty about exposing Joel to it, but our trio of
television castaways brave there way through such cinematic idiocy as Torgo, the
demented caretaker with a hideous knee disfigurement, who attempts to bring two
new devotees to his master’s nubile nymphet harem.
“Santa Claus Conquers The Martians” seems more like a fractured fairy tale then a B-movie despite whatever critics have said about it over the years though Joel and his pals give it a good ribbing and they absolutely tear apart the Patrick Swayze flick “Road House,” which had played theaters during the time of this episode’s broadcast. A young Pia Zadora plays a Martian girl in the film too.
It is simply
amazing at times to think these films were ever even made and then to actually
have a great time viewing these horrible movies because of the jokes mercilessly
inflicted upon them by Joel and his robot friends. Presented in the (1.33:1)
aspect ratio of their television broadcast, the videotaped segments look crystal
clear while the films look terrible, with “Manos” looking particularly
bad. This is how the films were presented on the show and not any fault of the
DVD authoring. “Manos” includes a Chevrolet featurette that the gang rips up
even better than the feature that follows and the DVD includes a 31-minute
blooper reel entitled “Poopie.”
Both discs
feature English Stereo Sound, but no captioning options. Both DVD-Videos also
feature full motion animated menus and scene selections that are easy to
navigate. “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Essentials: 2-DVD Set” will
debut on DVD-Video from Rhino Home Video on Tuesday, August 31, 2004.
