With
numerous individual DVD releases as well as seven box sets and counting,
“Mystery Science Theater 3000” continues to be as popular as it was on cable
TV in the 1990s now on DVD through Rhino Home Video. This latest batch contains
some great bad movies for the crew of the Satellite Of Love to rip apart
with their signature mix of quips that range from the mainstream to the obscure.
This broad scale of humor is what helped to make the show a crossover success
with fans of all ages across the country. Three of the episodes feature Joel
Hodgson while one episode and the three bonus short films feature Mike Nelson.
The mad Doctor Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and his henchman TV’s Frank
(Frank Conniff) transmit terrible movies to Joel in an attempt to break his
spirit so that they can then use the film to enslave the world. Joel and later
Mike’s only defense is his robot friends and their collective sense of humor.
“Hercules
Unchained” is funny enough without the MST3K comments, but with it, it is
laugh out loud funny with the robots making cliché music whenever a busty woman
lusting after Hercules appears. One line said during a scene where Achilles is
chasing a few women down the stairs after realizing Hercules has come back to
his senses had my rolling. It was something like “Ancient Greece with the
Kennedys.” They do an even better job with “Hercules Against The Moon Men”
frequently making fun of Alan Steel who stepped into the role Steve Reeves left
behind. This is one film that has to be seen to be believed. “Prince Of
Space” was a very low budget series of Japanese superhero films for children.
This episode is from the SCI FI Channel era and features Mary Jo Pehl as Doctor
Forester’s mad daughter. While watching “Prince Of Space” the Satellite
Of Love gets pulled through a wormhole and viewers get to see all sorts of
space-time and parallel universe oddities that include a marionette puppet made
to look like Mike Nelson, who in one reality is also a robot while another
reality actually gives viewers a rare exterior shot with Mike and the robots
since the show was primarily shot inside a studio. “The Killer Shrews” turns
out to be the weakest of the films that gets skewered though the Killer Shrews
song Joel and the Robots sing to a variation of the MST3K opening theme song is
worth watching the episode for alone.
Bonus
features include a never-before-seen short from the MST3K vault entitled
“Assignment Venezuela” (24:21) that still has the time scale on the upper
left corner and is separated into five chapter stops. Two more shorts entitled
“Century 21 Calling” (13:26) and “A Case Of Spring Fever” (8:25), which
features “Coily” a sadistic animated character that torments a character who
wishes he would never see a spring again is something that has to be seen to be
fully appreciated. The first two are in color while the remaining short is
presented in black and white. All feature Mike Nelson and the robots. Both
“Hercules” films are presented in color while the remaining films are
presented in black and white. Each episode is presented in the original (1.33:1)
color video presentation as they were broadcast and the picture quality is as
good as one is likely to ever see MST3K on television. Each episode also
features a clear English Stereo Soundtrack, but unfortunately there are no
captions for the hearing impaired or subtitle options. The interactive menus for
all four episodes are completely animated with full motion scene selections and
all are easy to navigate.
