I
have seen commercials on Comedy Central for “The Man Show,” but up until
receiving this DVD box set, I have never really watched it. The show is an
unapologetic salute to male chauvinism with a sophomoric sense of humor. That
noted I think if I were somewhere between the ages of 14 and 20 I probably would
get a kick out it, but as a thirtysomething single heterosexual male, I find I
can sit down and laugh at a few of their gags, but after a few episodes I start
to get tired of it. So aside from teenagers, I think “The Man Show” is
really aimed at college guys and perhaps men involved in social clubs or
whatnot.
The
ironic thing about “The Man Show” is both of these guys make some good
points regarding human sociology. Do I think they are correct about everything?
Of course not, but I’d be a liar if I were not to point out that men are men
and women our women and there will always be differences between the sexes
because of biology and chemistry lest we forget the conditioning both men and
women face from the world’s most popular babysitter - television. However I am
getting too serious about something that is supposed to be fun so I am going to
get off of my soapbox and type about the ten episodes included in this DVD set.
It
is impossible for a straight male not to have a visceral attraction to the sight
of beautiful women in sexy clothes or even better, with no clothes at all. So
the “Juggies” are sweet eye candy to say the least, but if it were just
girls placating to the male viewers on camera the show would get dull. So what I
found most enjoyable about “The Man Show” were the stunts and segments that
enabled the hosts to make the show larger in life. Among the funnier gags is one
where Jimmy Kimmel goes around asking people for a bite of what they’re
eating. I found it funny because I have a friend who is exactly like that. If
one is eating or drinking something around him, he almost can’t resist asking
for some. Even funnier though is if he doesn’t ask because you can see the
want in his eyes almost like the way a dog begs for scraps, but not as
desperate. Adam Carolla taking his mother out on Freudian date was pretty funny
too. The segment where the guys try to get people to sign a petition to end
“Women’s Suffrage” is funny, but sad because too many women and men have
no idea what they were signing. It is almost like a stunt you would expect
Michael Moore to do on “TV Nation” or “The Awful Truth.”
The
Father and Son advice segments are also pretty funny, but how many fart jokes
with monkeys can you expect anyone over the age of 25 to laugh at? I also
enjoyed the Household Hints From Adult Film Stars, but who wouldn’t? The
episodes are spread across three discs packaged in transparent slim keep cases
within a cardboard slipcase. The extra features are all found on disc three and
basically feature more of the same thing you’ve seen on the show, but for
various reason never aired. More Household Hints From Adult Film Stars, more
Father and Son segments, more monkey jokes, more girls jumping on trampolines,
and Angelique’s sexy audition footage that won her a job on “The Man Show”
as one of the Juggies.
The
menus are well designed and easy to navigate and the packaging is definitely eye
catching. The image quality looks okay, but not quite as clear as one might
expect from a videotaped show only a few years old. The English Stereo
Soundtrack is clear. Overall, “The Man Show: Season One: Volume One: 3 DVD-Video
Box Set” should satisfy fans of the show and is a nice set (no pun intended)
to check out. “The Man Show: Season One: Volume One: 3 DVD-Video Box Set” is
available now at retailers on and offline from Comedy Central Home Video.
