While “The Matrix” on DVD was one of the major titles released by Warner Home Video that literally established the format as the home video software of choice, a lot has happened in the nearly nine years since DVD was first introduced and with the expected introduction of high definition DVD formats just weeks away at the time of this writing, I’m afraid that the UMD for PSP version of “The Matrix” will not have the kind of impact on the portable home video format that the DVD had in general. However I think the UMD will still sell well regardless of the recent news that several distributors are scaling back their UMD-Video for PSP releases. I’ve said it before and I stick by my words, “the Sony PlayStation Portable is the first step in the inevitable merger between portable and home entertainment” There will be others to follow and for the most part, there is not much out there short of being able to make a cell phone call or use it as a walkie-talkie that the PSP cannot do at least as good as most other portable entertainment alternatives.
Day-in, day out, humanity has been lulled into an illusion created by all-powerful machines that comprise a large network of sentient artificial Intelligence and use humanity literally as batteries in a nightmarish symbiotic relationship. However, a prophesy of one who will lead the fight to free humanity from the matrix has a select group of freedom fighters jacking into the matrix in search of their savior while trying to evade the clutches of the Agents, computer anti-virus programs that are practically unstoppable within this artificial world.
Honestly, this film is so huge and was so successful, I do not think an extensive review of the film itself is necessary except to say the Wachowski Brothers have managed to take elements from Hong Kong Cinema, Classic Science Fiction, Japanese Anime, Religion, Mythology and so on and created something that as a whole is original on to itself. “The Matrix” is the rare film that satisfies on so many levels that almost anyone can watch the film and enjoy it. In short, “The Matrix” is truly “the whole package!”
Warner Brothers new UMD edition
appears to be made from the same source materials used for the DVD released last
year that was exclusive to “The Ultimate Matrix Collection” box set and
features an anamorphic (2.40:1)
widescreen transfer that is simply great coupled with an intense Stereo
Soundtrack as well as a French Language Stereo Soundtrack and French, Spanish,
and Norwegian Language Subtitles encoded as options. Even the interactive menus
mimic the design of the DVD with an opening within the Architect’s monitored
film room before closing in on one screen with scenes from the film. The only
annoying aspect to this UMD is the terrible videogame like noise the disc makes
each time a user makes a choice. The menus feature full motion scene selections
and are otherwise well rendered.
I hope Warner Home Video will still
release the other two films on UMD to complete the trilogy now that “The
Matrix” is available on UMD for PSP at retailers on and offline.
